Why Don’t We Give God Thanks
By Anne H. Harrell

With Thanksgiving just a round the corner, we have things that we are very thankful to the Lord for. Yet do we ever stop and thank God for the blessings that He has bestowed upon us each and every day? For example do we drop our heads and thank God for our food that we are about to eat when we are in public? What about in the privacy of our own homes at meals do we stop and thank Him? When Christ feed the crowds He gave thanks. We are very fortunate to have food on our tables because there are people all over the world that do not have food on their table therefore worry about where their next meal will come from.

My heart aches when I think about the poor people that do not have food and have to scurry for every morsel of food. The children in foreign countries that are seen on TV rummaging for food; yet most of us have all the necessary needs met. Yet we act like animals and eat without thanking God for the meal that is bestowed upon us.
Acts 27:35 (KJV)
“And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat.”

Did we even think of thanking Him when He has provided a mortgage payment that we were not sure where it was going to come from? Yet, right at the last moment the Lord pulls through and we could breathe a sigh of relief; did we consider at all of thanking Him for helping us through one more crises? When we prayed and asked Him for help did we thank Him in advance? There are people that are thrown out of their homes daily. They are homeless; they have no roof over their heads to keep them out of the weather. Can you imagine not having your home and living outside in the cold?

There are times that we take for granted that our homes will always be there along with food on our tables. Yet a day may come when we could lose our home because of lost of a job or some other reversal such as a flood or earthquake or fire as destroyed our possessions. Yet we do not thank God for our personal effects each and every day? How dare us to not remember the great things that Christ has done for us.
Philip. 4:6 (KJV)
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”

When it comes to our health, how often do we thank God for giving us good health or for healing us from our health issues? Are we like the ten lepers that were healed by Christ yet only one came back and thanked Christ for healing him? Are we that forgetful that we don’t think about what Christ has done for us? Or are we so blinded by sin that we don’t see a blessing when we have received one. Are we constantly saying give me give me and not saying thank you?

Luke 17:12-19 (KJV)
“And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.”

Could it be that we suppose that God owes us a living that we assume that we should get what ever we want and not have to thank God for making provisions that we have our needs met? I have to admit that I am guilty at times of asking God for things then when He has provided I forget to come before Him and thank Him. We are all guilty at one time or another of that sin.

What about instead of waiting for Thanksgiving this year thanking Christ now and then remember to thank Him daily for all that He does for us. We will see the blessings that He gives more often and our heart will grow fonder. Each day is a blessing and it has its own blessings. If you were to stop and think about it you will see a blessing right now! Why not thank Him right now!
