Parable of Summer Morning
One day the mistress of the house went outside to luxuriate in the sights and sounds of a summer morning. Such times always filled her heart with praise and thanksgiving as she listened to the songs of the birds and heard the sound of water leaping down the waterfall into the garden pond. All around her was color and the sweet fragrance of living things. This day she had taken her little poodle outside with her.
After a bit, she noticed the restlessness of the dog. He paced the decks around and around again, sniffing as he went. The scent of ‘something’ that existed under the decking floor kept him in perpetual motion. Jingles, as he was called, could not get to ‘it’ yet he wouldn’t stop his pacing, his searching.
As the mistress watched, she felt first amused, then disturbed and finally, concerned. How could she make him understand that he was wasting his energy and exciting himself needlessly? But most importantly, Jingles was missing the peace of just resting in the presence of one who loved him and enjoyed his company. He could have been in her lap, receiving her tender stokes and soothing words of assurance. Silly, little dog!
Then the thought crossed my mind: “Maybe I’m like Jingles; pacing, searching, and whining for that which is out of my reach. Have I too, been missing the peace of resting in His Presence; the joy of experiencing His loving strokes and hearing soothing words of the One who loves and enjoys me? I wonder…….
