So many chores that I must do
and places I must be;
how do all these many hours
get away from me?

Children, friends, neighbors, spouse,
church activity
fight a battle for my time
and often hurry me.

But then I remember
a story that I know
about a woman just like me
who also hurried so.

Martha was to have a guest
in her house one day;
everything should be just right
for Jesus’ special stay.

But as he walked into her home
she didn’t even see
Mary welcoming him in
and laughing happily.

The table wasn’t even set,
the food was not quite done;
Martha’s sister, in no rush,
saw no need to run.

Instead she sat at Jesus’ feet
so she could hear His voice;
then He spoke and told her
she’d made the better choice.

“Martha, you’re distracted.”
I, too, feel those words sting;
Jesus also says to me:
“Choose the needful thing.”
