There are various vessels in this world. Vessel refers to an individual. No matter what category you fit in, the message of God is the same. Whatever may be the state you are in, God conveys this to you. “My child! When you are in My hands there is hope for you in whatever predicament you are in.”
Today, let us meditate about some vessels upon which the immense grace and mercy of the Lord falls. When the Designer deftly touches such vessels they get clothed with costly costumes of honor, glory and praise. The Potter perfects the clay that subjects to the Master’s will.
Perhaps you belong to one of the category listed below. Cheer up! God clearly speaks. ‘There is hope for you.’ Broadly speaking there are only two types of vessels namely vessels made for God’s glory and vessels made for destruction.
A Marred Vessel: A vessel that is deformed or disfigured is objectionable in the sight of man. It cannot be used for anything meaningful. It’s form makes another vessel turn away from. Such a vessel is ignored by the society. Perhaps you are a marred vessel forsaken by friends, your spouse who promised being faithful has been caught red handed in infidelity or that you are falsely accused. If you feel falling short in the standards of the world and that of your own there is hope for you. Do not be discouraged because you are still in the hands of the Potter and He can mould you into a vessel for His glory once again. Just don’t be brooding about the past from that fallen position but focus on the Lord, get up and get going.
The vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter; so he made it again into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to make. Jeremiah 18:4
An Empty Vessel: There is a very old adage. ‘Empty vessels make more noise.’ Quite often, many vessels are incapable of handling situations in life using a smooth touch. Empty vessels are kept in places where there is little or no access. Like Martha, many empty vessels come up with complaints that have no legs to stand. Who wants an empty vessel that has no desire for being filled? None. Empty vessels are secluded from society. There were times when on reasoning over an act done, I dislike the noise I had created by being an empty vessel. If only had I been filled with the love and hope of the Holy Spirit then, I would have reflected the likeness of Christ to those around me in such situations. Often, I have regretted thus. Yet, there is hope for empty vessels of this kind also. For in God are hidden the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. (Colossians 2:3) He is willing to fill the empty vessel.
Their nobles have sent their lads for water; They went to the cisterns and found no water. They returned with their vessels empty; They were ashamed and confounded And covered their heads. Jeremiah 14:3
A Displaced Vessel: This type of a vessel is found when a vessel intended for glory is found sitting in the place of destruction. The original intention of making the vessel is to be used in the house of the Lord. Unfortunately, this vessel has been carried away by the whirlwind into alien lands or places of destruction. This could be in the case of pastors, apostles, evangelists, prophets or any servant of God who has gone off track from the vision that God gave them. There is hope for such people in the sight of God. The Lord gives the clarion call to such vessels with compassion. ‘Return to the Me….. Today I will restore double to you.’ Such vessels can receive the anointing and gifts of the Holy Spirit without measure once again and bring glory to God’s name. Every moment of your life, examine whether you are in the right place, that is, in the place where you ought to be. If you happen to be in the wrong place ask God’ strength to flee from that place immediately. God will surely help you. Is the thinking of your vessel displaced? Are you anxious about pre-marital sex or watching forbidden sites? Then curb this thought with the power of the Holy Spirit. You are the temple of the Holy Spirit and the Spirit of God dwells in you. This thought should make you shudder before the presence of the Almighty God. If unprecedented happenings were to displace you, cheer up there is hope for you in Jesus Christ. He will gather you from the place where you are now and would fill and elevate you so that you may dwell in the secret place of the Most High.
They have brought the vessels of God’s house before you, and you and your lords, your wives and your concubines, have drunk wine from them. And you have praised the gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone, which do not see or hear or know; and the God who holds your breath in His hand and owns all your ways, you have not glorified. Daniel 5:23
A Rejected or an Abominable Vessel: It is also possible that you may be sitting in the right place with wrong contents within you. Such a vessel is known by the fruit and therefore is rejected by all. A vessel is expected to contain contents that are useful for mankind. If your vessel is harbouring hatred, jealousy, malice, falsehood and other bitter ingredients then surely it will be rejected in the eyes of all men. Are you an unwed mother or father struggling to survive in this society that has caught you? Knowingly or unknowingly if you have been the cause for abominable acts, there is still hope for you in the blood of Jesus Christ. Repent and return to God. The blood of Jesus Christ alone cleanses us from all our sins. God will purify all the abominable things found in your heart and would pour out His Holy Spirit into you and make you into a new creation. God will make a way for you when you conclude that there is no way out. The reason being Jesus Christ is the only Way.
Who sit among the graves, and spend the night in the tombs; who eat swine's flesh, and the broth of abominable things is in their vessels. (Isaiah 65:4)
A Broken Vessel: The Psalmist cries out. “Lord I am like a broken vessel. Of what profit am I to You? I am worthless as I see in every way.” Several years ago, a servant of God visited Sri Lanka as a representative of the local government to sort out the problems of the tea garden employees. A young man named Andrew was entrusted with the task of being his guide. Besides being a social worker, he was also a businessman. One day the man of God spoke to him. “Andy! How is it at this very young age, you are a social worker?” He simpered at first then became sad. “Oh man of God! My life is a tragic one. My father owned a shop. Owing to a division in the society, the rivals set fire to the shops that belonged to our community people. Entrapped in the fire my father cried. ‘Andy! Save me.’ I stood helpless. On that day a firm decision was planted in my heart. I will help all those who suffer. With the thought of my father, I give myself to serve the people. I am a broken hearted man.” Tears came tumbling down. Perhaps you are like this Andrew. Pick up the shards and place it in the hands of the Potter. He will meticulously fix and cement it with His unconditional love and the vessel that emerges as a result will surely shine for His glory.
I am like a broken vessel. Psalms 31:12
How are you as a vessel? Bringing glory to God or profaning His name? A little thought can make the difference. Whatever be the form or the state of your vessel always remember there is life for a look at Christ the One crucified on the cross of Calvary. There is hope for you. Repent and return to the Redeemer and He will restore you to original glory. Nothing but Jesus Christ alone can fill the vacuum within. People try ways and means to fill this void space in their vessel with alcohol, sex, luxurious costumes anything that appears to fill the space. However, this space can be filled only by the Potter and that is possible when you allow Him to enter your heart. He patiently waits knowing at the door of your heart. Will you not open?
