NO BEGGARS WELCOME HERE
I saw a little girl; maybe six or seven, gaunt face and hollow eyes
Holding the hand of a little boy just about half her size
They knelt in the gravel after the trucks had gone
Scooping up dried beans that had fallen on the ground
I saw them earlier at a truck parked in the loading dock
I heard her ask a question, the answer gave me a shock.
I know that the food you have is for hungry kids
Is there something you can spare? Maybe with dented lids?
The volunteer sent her away “NO BEGGARS WELCOME HERE”
As she walked away she wiped away a tear.
My heart called out to God to tell me what to do
He told me “take them home, they will trust in you.
I took them to the store to get them what they need
They were timid and afraid that want would turn to greed
We picked just a few things and I took them home
I promised from now on they would never be alone
If I live to be 100 I will not forget that day
NO BEGGARS WELCOME HERE, that’s what I heard him say.
