Yesterday, when there was still time,
To put you to bed, with a nursery rhyme,

To braid your hair, to dry your tears,
To hold you tight, and calm your fears.

We strolled along the summer path,
Wiggling our toes, in fresh cut grass.

By my side, each and every day,
You never wandered far away.

Dreaming of life, its secrets to share,
Until the child beside me, was no longer there.

My legs grew weak, while yours grew strong,
Soon I fell behind, and you hurried on.

Leaving behind the cap and gown,
The wedding veil, then soon the sound,

Of little feet upon the stairs,
Of dirty diapers and puree pears.

Another young family enjoying their prime,
While life slips away one day at a time.

We watched from afar, as you forged ahead,
Too busy to hear, what might have been said.

To let you know, we were falling behind,
Growing tired and weary, of the grueling climb.

Unknown to us, in this journey of time,
We switched places, yours with mine.

Treasure this time as your children grow,
For soon where they are, you cannot go.

The gap will widen, and soon you will find,
Once again you switched places, yours with mine.
