Beyond it all
A middle-aged couple once lived in a fine ten room residence on the hills of Jamaica. Situated in an excellent up-scale neighborhood, it stood as a split-level building with a well-cared for garden, and the scenery of the valley stretching as far as the eye could see to the southern coastline of the country. Large family reunions gathered frequently on pleasant evenings for celebrations of one kind or another.
Youth’s beauty had fled with the inevitable deterioration of everything. Years later, decay shouted at you from rotting carpets once gorgeous that spread throughout, and red ants infested the floors under a leaking roof. The middle-aged couple no longer lived there. The husband had passed on after the struggle of failing kidneys. He was dead, buried, and forgotten, as the world marched on to fulfill its own goals. After three strokes the wife also had gone to her eternal home. Of course she is remembered by her remaining children and the great business she had built up. Apart from that, her name is rarely called, because she is no longer there.
The evidence of degeneration, decay, and death is spread throughout all living things, whether human or animal, animate or inanimate. Nothing on this earth or anywhere in the universe lasts forever.
Although not a professing believer, my grandmother often repeated these significant words, “Nothing lasts forever, but the Word of God!” The idea that things evolve into a better state is fallacious, and without solid scientific evidence.
Sacred scripture not only recounts the rebellion of man, but also its terrible consequences for the entire human race. “Cursed is the ground for your sake; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, and you shall eat the herb of the field. In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust you shall return.”
Discern for yourself now whether what the Bible says is true or not. Those fearsome words do not indicate an evolving upward, but a devolving downward, and the science of plants confirms the accuracy of that curse.
Every seed first dies in the earth, then resurrects to produce fruit after its kind. In the agony of living, molested by weeds and pests and cumbered about by thorns and thistles, it ripens, grows old, and finally returns into the ground from which it came. If it does not bear fruit, it is chopped down, cast into the fire, and disappears from earth and is forgotten.
If you believe that things evolve upwards, visit the auto shop, where rusting cars are patched up with new parts, to last just a few more years, eventually to stagger along the highway and later to be abandoned and sold to the junk yard. Its battery still corroding, its cushioned seats soiled and disintegrating, its essential parts will totter like an old man about to fall down along the way.
Solomon has left for us God’s verdict for everything animate and inanimate in the universe: ALL IS VANITY. A preacher once told us young people that the word ‘vanity’ could be translated “soap bubble.” He kept repeating the solemnity of the brevity of all things, “Soap bubble of soap bubbles; all is soap bubbles.” Like beautiful soap bubbles that glisten in the sun, whatever we can see with our natural eyes only lasts for a few thrilling moments, then goes ‘poof’ and disappears. Everything material is made of dust, condemned by the Creator to degenerate.
But is man, the highest of the animal kingdom (according to the evolutionist), exempt from this catastrophe? If you have not discovered it yet, man does not evolve, has not evolved, and will never evolve into something better. No amount of struggle will cause him to escape the fate of the curse of rusting out, corrosion of his body parts, and finally death.
In fact, W.E. Lammerts, a geneticist and specialist in the breeding of ornamental plants, has written that “long continued study of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, indicates that most mutations are lethal.”
Theodisius Dobzhansky comments, “The classical mutants obtained in Drosophila usually show deterioration, breakdown, or disappearance of some organs. Mutants are known which diminish the quantity or destroy the pigment in the eyes, and in the body reduce the wings, eyes, bristles, and legs. Many mutants are, in fact, lethal to their possessors. Mutants which equal the normal fly in vigor are a minority, and mutants that make a major improvement of the normal organization in the normal environments are unknown.”
Duane Gish, a member of the American Chemical Society and a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemists in his book “Evolution: The Fossils Still Say No!” has also asserted that “very often a mutation proves to be lethal, and they are almost universally harmful.”
The idea that anything in this universe evolves through struggle to survive, to be fitter than the last generation, is ludicrous to say the least. Man is always fighting to find new antidotes, antibiotics, and inventions to drive away disease and death. Besides, every new invention has its side effects, and something within human biology resists the antidote, so that a new strain of bacteria emerges that screams at us, “You are doomed to die! We will conquer you, and if you find a new antibiotic, we will cause degeneration to continue, for degeneration does not climb upwards but sinks to levels of destruction in the human frame.”
As I studied history at school, I realized that men have not evolved into better human beings. The holocaust, the rise of communism and other repressive regimes, dictatorships and nations that destroy each other, the hatred that exists in human relationships, the breakdown of family life, the injustices enshrined in governmental constitutions to abuse people, reveal the remarkable propensity to decline socially in every part of the world. Economic decline in every nation only confirms biblical revelations of disintegration in the last days.
As you watch the news and hear the increase in disasters worldwide, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, famines, and nations rising up to devour other nations, it is hard to avoid the inescapable conclusion that all things do not become better, but worse.
According to scientists, the universe is running downward, not evolving upward, but deteriorating steadily toward an ultimate heat death. Our sun, they say, is burning off its own mass at a rate of four million tons per second.
