“Here we go again,” sighed Sally. “Miss Babby always gives homework. But Mommy says we have to attend school.” Just then the bell rang.
“Oh boy! Recess!” exclaimed Sally. Sally jumped over some classmates while running to the door. Looking around outside she thought, “It’s a great day to play.”
While playing with her sister Alley and some friends she noticed something out the corner of her eye. A dog. He was headed toward them.
“Run!” shouted someone. Sally froze. She hadn’t seen a dog this big. He’s huge. “Come on,” cried Alley Everyone scattered. The dog started chasing Sally.
She began running fast. She had to get away from the dog. She saw the woods ahead. She wasn’t supposed to go into the woods, but this dog was after her. She wasn’t slowing down. Then she saw something else out the corner of her eye. “Oh no! Another dog!” Sally ran into the woods. She had to get away.
“Stop!” Alley cried. “Sally stop!” Sally realized Alley was yelling. She slowed to a stop. Gasping for air, Alley said, The dog’s gone. He started chasing something else.”
Regaining their breath, they began looking around. “Where are we?” asked Sally. “Not far from school. Let’s rest some before going back,” suggested Alley. “Okay. Sure could use a nap after running from the dog.” agreed Sally.
So they laid down. A sound roused Sally from a sound sleep. Sleepily, she looked around. Nothing. Almost asleep again, she heard the sound again. Still, she didn’t see anything. Something hit her head. “Ow!” cried Sally.Alley woke up and saw Sally rubbing her head.
“What happened?” asked Alley.
“I heard a sound, then something hit me on the head.” explained Sally.
“It’s your imagination,” retorted Alley. Just then something hit Alley on the head.
“Ow!” exclaimed Alley.
“My imagination eh?” They looked to see some nuts laying on the ground. More nuts began hitting the girls. Running away, Sally yelled, “Let’s get out of here!”The girls hid behind some bushes. The girls peeked out. Nothing. Something moved.
“Squirrels!” Sally yelled.
“Attack,” cried Alley. Alley and Sally ran toward the tree. The squirrels began throwing nuts again. The girls chased the squirrels to the top of a tree. The squirrels jumped into another tree. The girls stopped.
“Let’s go back down,” suggested Sally. Sally noticed Alley wasn’t following.
“What’s wrong?” asked Sally.
“I’m afraid,” replied Alley. Sally climbed up.
“I’ll help you down.” offered Sally.
“No!” cried Alley.
“It’s okay. Just put one paw after the other and don’t look down.” Sally stated.
“You can do this. Just follow me. I won’t leave you.”
“You promise?” asked Alley.
“Promise.”
“Let’s go.” They slowly climbed down the tree. When they reached the bottom, Alley hugged Sally.
“Thanks.” Alley said.
“Why did you have to do that for?” asked Sally.
“Do what?”
“Hug me.”
“Because you saved me,” replied Alley.
“Oh brother.” said Sally, then smiled.
