Invasion of the Bedroom
Anybody that has ever had kids knows that when Mommy and Daddy take a Sunday afternoon nap, it’s not really a nap. Well here’s my naptime story. On this particular day, after a full round of Sunday School teaching, choir singing, worshiping and everything in between we finally made it home. Dinner was over. The dishes were done. This was one of those rare times when we didn’t have to rush back to Sunday evening church early to attend a meeting or some kind of rehearsal. I was delighted to think that we might actually pull off a “Sunday afternoon nap”. It had been a long, long time, (if you know what I mean).
The kids were surprisingly cooperative. The atmosphere was perfect for a little romance so I bedded the kids down, closed the blinds, turned out the lights and snuggled in with my husband.
As usual I listened to make sure the kids were really asleep. Much to my dismay my son wasn’t. Ever so slowly he opened our bedroom door and peered in. As the light from the hallway pierced our private world I pretended to be asleep. Without saying a word he began to construct what resembled a camp at the foot of our bed. After retrieving an old lounge chair from the back deck he brought it in along with his favorite pillow, stuffed animal and blanket. Just when I thought he was finished he left the room and came back with the old box fan from downstairs, (funny thing, I don’t remember the central air going out). With no explanation at all he lay down, adjusted himself on the squeaky old chair and piped a cheerful “good-night”.
My husband & I just laid there nose to nose trying hard not to laugh. It was one of those priceless moments where you just have to know that your marriage is secure and strong enough to survive an occasional invasion of the bedroom. After all, little boys grow up and become harder to hold. We promised each other to capture the memory and hold that in our hearts forever.
