If I awoke in morning's light
And heard Life call to me
From heaven's gate a welcome song
If I knew today would be
The day I'd be with Him
Would I be found beside the stream
Waiting to be bid "Come In."
Would I work to straighten out
The messes in my life,
Call up the ones I may have hurt
Forgiven those who've wounded me
If I knew today would end
With me in Paradise?
Would I gather up the remnants
The works I did not do,
Would yesterday have ended well
In right relationship to You?
If death, in one last mocking thrust
Sped toward my frame its final blow
Would I receive it with the joy
Of knowing where I'll go?
Would I welcome death as friend-to-friend
No fear, but certainty of this
That through a door well oiled, I'll ease
Into eternal bliss.
Oh Lord, my Lord, may I walk thus
Feet planted firmly on the ground
Eyes focused up and heart aright
Ears tuned to hear the trumpet's sound
Cry "Come up here dear child of mine
The door to life is open wide.
I wait for you inside."
