Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit. Proverbs 18:21 NKJ
I read about this experiment. For 81 days two sealed quart jars sat, each with a cup of cooked rice inside. On one jar a note was written and placed toward the rice--I hate you. You are bad rice. I hope you die. On the other jar a note was written and placed toward the rice--I love you. You are good rice. I hope you live. On day 81, the I hate you jar was filled with black mold. In the other jar, the rice looked light brown, but easily recognizable as rice. Try the experiment yourself and see what happens.
If a written note has power to effect a cup of rice, how much more power do words effect you and I? Words matter. I remember the advise mom gave--If you canít say something nice donít say anything at all.
I wish I had always taken that advise. Iíve gossiped about people I like and donít like. Iíve spoken without thinking. I have said hurtful things on purpose when angry. The words reflected death. I have told my family ďI love youĒ thousands of times. I have spoken words of encouragement to family and friends. I have prayed for the sick and hurting. Those words reflected life.
Howís your control over the tongue? Do your words reflect death or life? What words are you speaking over your family?
You will see the words manifested in your families actions and attitudes. Check your words when you are tired, angry or even hungry. Value yourself enough to get enough rest, seek peace and eat healthy. Spend time with God in prayer, meditate on His Word and fast when moved. The more of Godís Word you have inside you the more fruits of the Spirit come out.
Father, set a guard over my mouth. Help me listen more and speak less. Fill me with Your love and grace and mercy. Thank you Jesus. Amen.
