It's dawn on a cool fall morning, the garden is awakening, a bird sings in the distance. The air is still and moist with dew. Dew drops are sitting on the leaves of the plants in the garden and adorning the spider webs like gems in sunlight. There is no traffic on the street. The city has yet to awaken.
The cat sat as still as a stone, pretending she couldn't be seen. Watching, 'Who is this intruder?' she thought to herself. The leaves of the cucumber plant that had overrun half of the garden rustled ever so slightly.
'Is it really there?' she thought. The plant's large dark green leaves moved ever so slightly, and one yellow eye could be seen, just barely, peering though the leaves. 'There, what is that? It's not supposed to be in MY garden!' exclaimed the cat to herself. She tensed. She tilted her head more. She watched. She had decided to make sure the intruder knew who's garden this was and that it wasn't welcome.
The leaves rustled again, the intruder stepped out from under the leaves. It turned it's back, unconcerned that it was being watched by a deadly attacker. It stepped up to a leave and chomped down. Again, it chomped. And again! 'Does it not see me? Does it not know how powerful I am?' The cat was incensed with the creature's actions. She stood, no reaction from the intruder. She stepped forward, again no reaction. She began to move toward the creature. Cautiously she approached, then it was there, in front of her! It turned it's head, it looked at her, and then, it turned away and chomped on a leaf. 'It turned away! How could it! Does it not know I am queen! Does it not know it does not belong? Does it not know it does not belong here?' The cat raised her paw, claws extended. 'I will teach it to respect me!' she screamed to herself. She brought down her paw, swiftly and strong. 'Eeeewwwwwoooo' she screamed! That hurt! What kind of creature was this? Why is it's back hard?'
The cat backed away. The creature stopped chomping leaves and turned toward the cat. A dull spark appeared in it's eye. It moved forward, one slow step at a time. It moved toward the cat. The cat hissed at it. The creature kept coming forward. The cat arched it's back as tall as she could and fluffed her tail. Hair standing on end. The creature approached. It lifted it's head, reached down to the cats foot. The cat lept. Up as far as she could then backwards. 'How dare he!' the cat exclaimed. Momentarily standing as still as a statue. Then darted away in a streak that rivaled the speed of light. The tortoise slowly turned and headed for the lettuce.
