Does God have a sense of humor?
That’s a good question. Reminds me of a little saying a friend of mine had taped to his mirror. Every morning when he went in to shave he saw: “Praise the Lord anyway”.
It kept him from thinking more of himself and thinking more of God, with some humor added. Unfortunately, I never had one taped on my mirror. However, in approaching the age of 60 I don’t need one now. Age changes perspectives.
I look at some of the animals God has made and have to imagine a keen sense of humor.
But, maybe not.
Only twice have I felt God’s humor and once I had a good laugh with Him at the time. The first was when my wife and I had a very strong disagreement about whether to switch churches or not. I loved the church we were attending but she wanted one closer to home. I was actually losing sleep over it. I was in the barn one day, had climbed up to the loft to throw down some hay, when I fell on my knees and said, “God, what am I suppose to do?” I felt a tap on my head and looked up. God said, “You are relying on men, rely of Me.” I thought, “That must be the okay to change.” God responded, “I didn’t say that.” I could actually feel a slight vibration of laughter when He said that but more so a sternness. I didn’t laugh but thought, “What did He say? ‘I’m relying on men rather than Him’.” I then understood that it didn’t make any difference where I went as long as I relied on Him (and the church was a biblical church; both were). Looking back at this instance I can now chuckle with God.
The second instance was when I was helping in a Nursing Home with the Sunday lessons. One day we started talking about life after life experiences and someone shared a dream he had about floating over a field of flowers and the magnificent colors, more brilliant and beautiful than anything he’d ever seen. We tried to find an explanation of why things would look so much better in heaven but didn’t really come up with a good answer. The next Saturday night I met my wife at the front gate to open it for her to drive through when I noticed a couple of flowers in the lawn. I knew they were weeds but the color was something I had never seen before, beautiful. They really caught my eye. I went over to discover they were only a common field plant which were sown in our area many years ago by farmers for sheep to graze on - bachelor buttons. I wondered why they looked so different. Then I realized that my wife’s head lights combined with the glow of the field light gave them a different hue. Of course! Everything will look different in heaven because of the light, the Pure Light, God's pure light. His pure light will reveal everything, the beauty of all that He originally made and is now tarnished by sin.
I picked a couple of the bachelor buttons to take in the next day for the Nursing Home discussion. As I got out of the pick up, I thought to myself I would need to tell the men what the flowers were for – to feed sheep. I then heard God say, “I just fed you.” I looked up to heaven and had a loud laugh with God right there in the parking lot. Yes, there’s real meaning behind what He said and He knew I got the messages – He is the Shepherd, I am a sheep, He just fed me spiritually, and He does have a great sense of humor.
But does the Bible give us a hint God does have a sense of humor? I believe it does. As in some passages there is a clear message and then a dual message. If you read closely you might be able to see some humor in Mark chapter 7, verses 31-36. We have a miracle of Jesus healing a man who was deaf and stammered. What did Jesus tell him when He healed him? “Don’t tell anyone.” Yes, Jesus did not want people coming to Him for the miracles sake alone but for His words of truth. The miracles were only to show He was God. But can you imagine the look on this man’s face when as soon as he received his hearing and speech, the first thing he hears is, “Don’t tell anyone”. How many people to you know would say that with a straight face! I can imagine a twinkle in Jesus’ eyes with that one.
Yes, I believe God does have a sense of humor! I think I’ll now tape one of those sayings on my mirror to remind me every morning. Praise the Lord…anyway!
