Target audience: High School, College, University students or anyone battling with the “Existence of God” or “Evolution.” Positive statements are fine, but negative statements to improve the text are more than welcome. I improve by constructive criticism. This is not a biography, although biographic illustrations are interwoven to flavor the text. Do not forget to point out spelling, punctuation errors, and any text whose style or manner of expression seems awkward.
In the middle of the last century, socialism had not yet arrived in Jamaica. If it had, I may have been taught that the individual did not really matter.
From the distant past, many countries have been ruled by dictators who have sought to take away the freedom and basic rights of the individual. Their philosophy always held that everything must be done for the good of the community, the society and the state. While many people view personal choice as a precious gem to be cherished at all costs in every situation, socialism hinders the freedom of personal choice in many areas. For the sake of the state and community, socialist ideology in its extreme manifestation strangles the personal ambitions of ordinary men. Society, according to "socialism," can only be just when each individual loses his or her identity for the sake of the group.
Among the world’s worst dictators have been:
Joseph Stalin, the Soviet dictator from 1924 to 1953, who established the first Communist cult of personality and endeavored to purge society of his political opponents by killing millions of innocent people.
Adolf Hitler, in Germany, abolished the German constitution and reigned as the Nazi dictator from 1933 to 1945. By starting World War 11 in Europe, millions of people lost their lives. His “final solution” attempted to destroy all Jews in Europe through the Holocaust, and with the Third Reich he built a police state, which deprived Germans of their guaranteed basic rights.
Mao Zedong, founded The People's Republic of China and ruled from 1949 to 1976. Under Communism he organized several purges and bloody repressions resulting in millions of deaths.
Fidel Castro led the revolution that founded Communist Cuba, leading the dictatorship from 1959 to 2008, and with his brother, Raul, strangled the basic freedoms of the Cuban people.
Nicolae Ceausescu, one of the more ruthless Communist rulers in Eastern Europe, who built on the Stalinist model, through a cult of personality ruled Rumania from 1965 to 1989.
Recently in one Middle-Eastern nation, a convert to Christianity who had become a committed pastor, and was a father of two, was reportedly hanged for choosing to follow Christ.
Some time ago also, U-tube showed three Indian young men, believers in Jesus Christ, being beaten to death with iron pipes by a mob of Hindus. Surrounded by religious fanatics, determined to stop the spread of the gospel, there was no escape for them.
Thank God we were spared in Jamaica from that kind of evil and could still make decisions according to our consciences. The night I experienced a personal encounter with Jesus Christ, I made a personal choice, based on a deep personal need to love someone and to be loved. When I repeated those words ‘I am His and He is mine!’ I became someone very special to the Creator, and He became Someone very special to me. I found my personal identity.
Each believer is privileged and blessed to regard Jehovah as his very own.
Zechariah, the prophet, referred to Him in intimate terms, when he said, “The Lord, my God, shall come!” King David also did the same, when he prayed, “O Lord, my God, in You I put my trust!”
After the resurrection of Jesus Christ, Thomas, that doubting disciple, fell at the feet of the Risen Christ and confessed, “My Lord and my God!”
God has made it possible for each of us to have a personal relationship with Him and to call Him ‘Jehovah-Elohay’ ‘the Lord, my God!
Looking back, there seemed to have been a specific plan in an intelligent mind to fit me into a prearranged program. Not only was I to be a musician, a writer, a dramatist, but especially a preacher of righteousness, specific details and parts of a giant jig-saw puzzle, not obvious to me at the time.
Examining a jig-saw puzzle, firstly you will find ‘contingency.’ The creation of that puzzle was dependent on an intelligent process: someone sat down and designed it. Secondly, it will show proof of specificity. That means that specific, detailed, and precise patterns provide evidence that an intelligent mind designed it. Thirdly, the puzzle will reveal many signs of ‘complexity.’ Laid out on a table, it will appear confusing, because of the complexity of its interacting parts.
Numerous scientists and philosophers now accept the evidences of specific complexity in countless perfect circumstances in the universe. They concede that specified complexity is our way to empirically detect design in the universe; (empiric knowledge simply means knowledge that passes only through our five senses). For example, the universe must have the right atoms, the right molecules, and enough time and space. These coincidences also occur in the earth. For instance, the right galaxy type, location, type of star, distance from the sun, size of the moon, location of Jupiter, and composition of the earth. Life on earth would be impossible without any one of these factors.
Specific complexity, of course, occurs in the physical universe around us and is observable in the details and events of our everyday lives.
When a man is born into God’s kingdom, his spiritual eyes are open. He begins to see things through his spirit that he never saw before. Jesus once told a man named Nathanael, “From now on, you will see heaven open!”
After I entered a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, He gradually led me to follow Him, and like a sheep, to be a part of His flock. He once told His disciples, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me, and I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand.”
