From the moment Princess Cortalia was born to King Andren and Queen Svetlana of Corshaine. The King read letters to his beloved daughter about the kind of girl she was to be. When the Princess turned three, the King and Queen presented her with a marble chest.
The Queen opened it and said, "These gloves belonging to your daddy. If you want to be a good girl, you must wear them when your daddy’s not with you."
The little princess's eyes grew wide. She cried out, "Daddy!"
“Here in Corshaine even little princesses must go learn," the king said. "When you wear the gloves, it will be like holding my hand
King Andren bent down and kissed Princess Cortalia.
That night, Queen Svetlana tucked the Princess into bed and the King read the letter for that day.
My little princess loves her daddy above all always. She is kind to all.
Princess Cortalia went to the little girls school when she was four. At The Little Girls School all the girls wore their daddy's glove. They would smile and show them to the other girls in their class. They would pick up each other's toys and help each other do artwork.
The night before Princess Cortalia turned six and started the Big Girls School. King Andren didn't write a letter. He told this story instead.
Long ago, many little girls ran away from their daddies. My former assistant Luchien told them their daddies were no fun. He promised them triple white chocolate cake at every meal. I knew that every cake had a poisonous sugar that would slowly kill them.
Your brother Nikolai went to fight with Luchien. In the fight, he died, but before he hid my gloves so you could wear them. Then I went and asked the girls to go back to their daddies. I put my palms on the stomachs of those who came back to their daddies and the poisonous sugar came out of the girls.
Nikolai came to their daddies and give them gloves to give to their girls. Then he went to Naanaland and I picked up the gloves for you.
"I want the gloves," Princess Cortalia said.
The next day, she went in her classroom. She went up to a girl with bare hands.
“Where are your daddies gloves?" The little princess asked.
"Big girls don't need gloves anymore," she said.
"I know they can be a little big." I'll help you put them on," the Princess said.
The girl slapped Princess Cortalia's hand. The Princess’s eyes grew wide as the girl's hands turned midnight blue.
The Princess smiled and said, "Now the gloves will go on "
The girl spat on the Princess. The Princess looked as ink leaked from her mouth and her face
Princess Cortalia went home.
"How was your day?" Queen Svetlana asked.
"A girl was mean to me, and her hands turned blue," the Princess said. "Something weird came out of her mouth and face."
"What’s she wearing her daddy's gloves?" Queen Svetlana asked.
"No," the Princess said.
"Remember, girls can't being nice without the gloves on if their daddies are not with them.”
Several weeks later, a group of girls came around Princess Cortalia.
"Baby, Princess. Baby Princess, always needs her daddy", they chanted.
"No, I just want to be a nice girl," the Princess insisted.
"Only babies can't be nice without their daddies gloves," the girls said.
The Princess looked at her daddy's gloves. They were white and violet and they glittered.
The girl Princess Cortalia tried to help put on her daddy's gloves on the first day of school said, "You told me they were big." Just take them off for awhile. Your hands will get big enough for them."
Princess Cortalia looked up the gloves again. She could see half of each of her fingers.
"I'll get you some blocks," the girl said. "We can play together."
She's being nice and she's not wearing her daddy's gloves. The Princess thought, maybe Daddy and Mommy don't know everything.
The girl brought the blocks and put them on the floor.
The Princess tried to pick them up. She couldn't grasp them with her fingers. She slowly took off the gloves.
The girls pointed to her ears and laughed. They took the Princess by the hand and led her into the bathroom.
Princess Cortalia’s eyes grew narrow. Her hands and ears turned gray.
"You tricked me," she cried. She reached out to hit the girls. Her hands turned to steal. The girls jerked back. Suddenly King Andren came in the school. Then Princess Cortalia opened the bathroom door.
"I'm sorry, "she said. "Let's all go back to class."
The girls stared at her.
Then the King stared at his daughter's hands.
"You've been bad, haven't you?" King Andren said.
"I look bad," she said.
"You listened to girls who don't like their daddies," he answered.
"I tried to hit them," she cried.
The King stared at Princess Cortalia again.
"Was that good?" He questioned.
"No, I said I was sorry, and I am." The Princess replied.
"Give me your hands," King Andren.
Princess Cortalia reached out her hands. The moment she wrapped her fingers around her daddy's, they turned white as marble.
"Do you want me to put your gloves back on?" He asked.
The Princess smiled and said, "Yes, Daddy."
Her ears turned the same color as her hands.
When the other girls saw this change, they said, "Can we have our daddies gloves back?"
"Do you love your daddies?" King Andren.
"We want to be big girls," they said. "Big girls don't need their daddies."
The Princess and the King walked out of the classroom hand in hand.
