Encouragement
My first memory of my Mother was when I was about 3-4 yrs. of age.
I was having extreme pain in both of my ears (which later required 'lancing' as they called it back then). I remember Mom and Dad warming towels by our coal stove and placing them on my ears as I lay in my bed.
That was the beginning of many wonderful, caring memories of my Mom....
Julia Savage Wiginton.
When I read of Jesus washing feet and using a towel, I think of my Mom.
Being a farmer's wife during the Depression and raising 4 sons was not an easy life....
but Mom was 'the best'. Mom went to Heaven on Dec. 1, 1990 at 85 yrs. of age.
At her funeral, two young women told us of the tremendous influence my Mom had on their lives. They said that even though they came from a poor background, Mom always made them feel 'special'.
Mom left behind a Living Legacy of 'Well done, thou good and faithful servant'.
A written tribute by Mom's 4 sons speaks of her:
1) Concern
2) Convictions
3) Charity (Christ-like love)
4) Courage
5) Coronation of 'Well Done'
Here are some tributes to Christian Mothers:
Theodore Roosevelt:
"When all is said, it is the Mother and the Mother only....
who is a better citizen than the soldier who fights for his country."
D.L. Moody testified as he stood by the casket of his departed Mother:
"You have done more for me than anybody else in the world.
You believed in me when I was a wild sinner and you followed me with your prayers.
I owe more to you than anybody else in the world."
Paul Harvey:
"An ounce of Mother is worth more than a pound of priest.
You could write the rise and fall of all the great nations and sum up the reason for their fall in one sentence...'The home fell first'.
We've not been able to know for sure if this quote is from J.S. Barclay....
or J.Sidlow Baxter, but it's good.
"If a so-called 'working man' had to work a Mother's day, he would both 'strike'.....
and collapse!
A Mother's day begins at 6:30 a.m. to help get the family on their way by 8 a.m.
At midnight, Mom is still working.
An 8 hour day? Payment for 'overtime'?
These are things that Mothers know nothing about.
Mothers work as long as her family needs her."
All of the above could be said of 'my Moyne', the mother of our 4 children...
and our 3 adopted children (as well as MANY others who call her 'Mom')
One young lady (who lived down the street from us at that time) told La Moyne a few yrs. ago that she used to come by our house just 'hoping' that La Moyne might be outside so that she could just talk with her.
We were not aware that things were 'difficult' in her home as she never shared that. Years later after her parents divorced, she told La Moyne that it just helped having her 'listen' as she talked about her day at school and things in her teenage life.
Another time, the parents of a young man down the street were trying to 'get his attention' so they told him to move out until he could 'get his act together'.
We were not aware of his parents' decision when he asked if he could come live with our boys in our upstairs apartment.
When his Mom found out that he was living with us, she called and said,
"That was NOT what we had in mind, so tell him to get on back home!" :)
La Moyne has touched so many lives that one Mothers' Day, she rec'd 14 Mothers' Day cards from people who call her 'Mom'.
I told her, "That ought to tell you something!" :)
How I praise God for the Godly example my Mother-in-law (Mary Frederick Harris) set for La Moyne (and her brother and sister). I've witnessed La Moyne throughout these 56 yrs. as she has ministered to people and the loving/caring way in which she does that, came from her parents!!
I guess you might say that we were 'mobile' in our mission to serve the Lord.
Craig and Kevin were born in Ft. Worth while we were in Seminary.
Kyle was born in Seoul, Korea while we were serving as missionaries there.
Kristin was born here in Norman while we were in Student Work @ Oklahoma Univ.
We've been very blessed to have children who not only love the Lord, but who care about others, as they each minister to people via their own individual professions.
I know that most of this is due to La Moyne...
or as one of our daughters calls her, 'La Mom'.
I was busy as a Pastor, but I also tried to be faithful as a husband and Dad...
but 'La Mom' was most important.
She truly is an example of Proverbs 31 ('a good woman')....
and I Cor. 13 ('Christ-like love').
La Moyne's faithfulness reminds me of Mary in John 19:25:
"Now there stood by the Cross of Jesus, His Mother".
She was there all the time, from His birth to His death.
Dr. H.H. Hobbs uses the story from I Kings 3:27 about two Mothers and one deceased baby. His comments:
"Being a Mother is more than a name or title to bear. It involves more than biology.
It entails the sacrificial care and love which a 'true' Mother showers upon her children.
She does not make selfish demands, but gives herself in selfless love."
Billy Graham said, "Whether women realize it or not, you owe everything to Jesus Christ.
Only in Christianity have women been lifted to a true equality with men.
In many parts of the world, woman is still considered to be almost a 'beast of burden'.
It was Christ Who elevated womanhood."
CONCLUSION:
An unknown author wrote a 'Tribute to Mother':
'God took the fragrance of a flower....
the majesty of a tree....
the gentleness of morning dew....
the calm of a quiet sea....
the beauty of the twilight hour...
the soul of a starry night....
the laughter of a rippling brook....
the grace of a bird in flight...
the tender care of an angel.....
the faith of the mustard seed....
the patience of Eternity.....
the depth of the family's need.
Then God fashioned these things,
a Creation like no other....
and when His Masterpiece was through....
He called it simply....'Mother'.
I close with a quote from I Thessalonians. 1:2-3 that is appropriate for Mothers' Day:
"We give thanks to God always for you, remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labor of love, and patience and hope."
