I am convinced that God knew exactly what He was doing that fateful morning. He must have known more about Gideon’s army than the man himself. Perhaps those big tough guys really believed they were all that. Maybe their egos were so over inflated that it took a crow bar just to get their heads in the helmets. In my mind’s eye I see Gnarly Ned laughing it up with Daring Dave.
“You think you can throw that spear farther than me, Dave? I’m the master! Just watch my bulging biceps hurl this hulking stick! Arrrgh!”
“You’re no match for me, Insipid Earthworm! Watch and be amazed! Aaarrrgh!”
Give me a break. God knew their hearts. He sent the fraidy cats home first to prove a point. Then he got down to business. A drink of water later, and the big-heads were relived of their duties. How could it even be possible to defeat anyone with only 300 men? Simple. With God all things are possible. He still performs miracles to this day. The funny thing is, I think he waits until we see the situation as hopeless. That’s exactly when his glory outshines anything we think we can do on our own power. Amazing love. Amazing grace.
