How do I measure the life that I'm living?
Restricted by rules, or unselfishly giving?
Showing deep care, or enslaved by PC?
This is a challenge daily to me.
The teaching of Christ will all truth and great wealth
Says 'Love Your Neighbour as much as yourself'.
In Parable form the truth He affirms,
Now consider the lesson in modern day terms.
The Samaritan travelled a hazardous route
Of muggers in hiding, looking for loot.
And though he'd prefer to pass quickly through, He sacrificed safety in ways good and true.
He helped one in need, and to one nearly dead
He administered care - but he could have just said .....
"If I stop in this place where I'm weak and alone
There's no-one to help, and I've no mobile phone.
The dangers to me are too great to define
And I've no opportunity to call 9-9-9.
This man is a mess - that's quite plain to see -
But someone will help, its not up to me.
The conditions are dirty, and if I just stayed
Its really no place to offer first aid.
I've no plastic gloves, no cleansing hand-gel,
No anti-biotics to make this man well.
The risks are too great - he might have H-I-V,
Let someone else help - it's not up to me.
Or if I should lift him off this dirty track
Without more assistance, I'd damage my back.
He could ride on my donkey, I suppose that is true
But if the animal stumbled, he'd blame me and sue.
To save my own skin is the way to be free
If someone else helped, it'd be better for me.
You see, he needs nursing and medical care
And that leaves the question of 'Who', 'How'and 'Where'.
You can't choose just anyone, that wouldn't do
They have to be trained, with at least NVQ.
Then there's the matter of 'Who pays the fee'?
O let someone else help, take the burden off me."
But none of these things even entered the head
Of the goodly Samaritan who kindly instead
Was filled with compassion and did all he could
To help and to heal in the way that we should.
He lived our Christ's teaching in all of its wealth
Showing love to his neighbour as much as himself.
So, next time I'm faced with a need great or small
I'll try to remember and pray over all
That Christ would be glorified right in that place
And help me to minister His love and grace,
And then to acknowledge with humility
That the work is all His and He'll use even me.
