Recently I met a woman facing cancer.
It’s everyone’s worst nightmare.
Its terminal and time is short or so the doctors say.
She is a mother of five beautiful children, four young girls and an older brother in his late teens. Until recently she has homeschooled the girls and is a natural at mothering.
She is a Christian and believes in the goodness of God.
But for now, what do I say to her?
How do I answer her pleas for reassurance that all will be well?
She has firmly fixed her faith on beating the cancer and being a survivor.
All her hopes and energies are directed with this in mind.
So what can I say to her, how do I respond to her enquiries?
I am a stranger, her nurse.
I know God has put her in my way for such a time as this. Nothing is a coincidence with God.
But am I even sure that God is going to heal her!
I have had this situation before, when despite all the faith and belief and confession about healing and prayers a friend has died.
It can be so hard to take and continue to believe in the Prayer of Faith for healing.
So here I am once again faced with the dilemma of just what to say that is appropriate and right for this situation.
What to do?
I want her to be healed and I will pray for that but at the same time
I don’t want to give false hope or rob her of the time to prepare herself and her family. I also don’t want to take the hope from her eyes or the chance that God will heal her in this situation. I have seen God heal sometimes and not at others.
Can all be rather confusing and complicated?
So I do the only thing that I can do. I run into the arms of my heavenly father and pour out my confusion and doubts to the only one who can understand.
I tell him my fears and anger (yes even that too.)
It isn’t fair God. I really don’t understand the how’s and why’s.
I am at a loss as to what to say, so tell me what is it that I should do in this situation lord!
Finally I still my soul so God can answer my pleas, I am ready to listen.
He had this to say, “I was to pray for the woman’s faith.”
That she will be strengthened in this time to have the faith to face what ever comes. Whether that is healing on earth or entering the kingdom of God forever and ever.
Sometimes we think it takes a lot of faith to believe in healing when circumstances are negative, but I think that it takes an even greater Faith to believe in the goodness of God when things don’t get better and are at there worst.
To be like Job and say “The Lord giveth, The Lord taketh away, and blessed be the name of the Lord.”
That is the faith that builds mountains and brings the Kingdom of God to this earth.
