The small town was restless,
Filled with the chatter of weary travelers.
All were seeking a place to lay their heads
For the night.
Overcrowded sanctuaries increased emotions
And hot tempers flared.
In the midst of all the chaos,
A baby was born.
No one noticed except the tired,
Dirty animals which shared their stalls
With the child's parents.
The moaning of the laboring mother
Perhaps annoyed the other sojourners
Who were relieved when the child
Had finally arrived.
The mother lie resting upon the straw.
Her strength was spent and yet,
A smile was engraved
Upon her young face.
She gazed up at her betrothed
Who gently, lovingly
Lowered the infant into her arms.
His hands trembled slightly
As he softly caressed his
Son's tiny head.
He was a bit startled when he noticed
The shepherds at the entrance
Of the little stall.
Some were standing, others kneeling,
All in reverent awe.
They had left their flocks,
In the middle of the night,
To find this newborn child
So to worship Him.
The other travelers wondered
At the intrusion, but
Turned in their makeshift beds
And resumed their sleep.
The star shined brilliantly outside
As the tiny town settled down in the night.
And so He came...
Without celebration,
Without much ado,
The King was born.
No one knew, no one cared.
The world knew Him not...
