{Kathleen glanced at her watch. It was now half past three in the afternoon. Her friend was already an hour late. She impatiently tapped her fingers on the table. She was seated by the glass window of the coffee shop. She kept on looking outside, hoping that her friend would soon arrive.

Just then, she saw Benjamin, the husband of her cousin Cynthia. He was coming out from his car. She was about to knock at the window to catch his attention when a tall beautiful red head emerged from the car. The lady was obviously neither just a colleague nor an acquaintance. Kathleen tearfully watched how they affectionately held hands, the way they looked into each others eyes, their warm embrace, and that lingering kiss. How could Benjamin be such a two-timer! He and Cynthia had been married for almost ten years and they were blessed with a wonderful son. Cynthia, as far as Kathleen knew, was a loving wife and mother.

As soon as Kathleen arrived home that night, she immediately called up Benjamin. Her intention was to clarify what she had witnessed. He vehemently denied the accusation, accused Kathleen of telling lies and of trying to destroy his "beautiful family". In anger, Benjamin bawled out at her, forbidding Kathleen from ever communicating with him or his family again.}

Confronting the truth can get very ugly for most people. It is like turning on the blinding luminosity of the sun directly on the transgression, revealing all its hideous angles. Many are indeed afflicted with the truth phobia, which is also called "truthophobia". But what should Christians know about telling the truth?

John 8:32 promises, "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." Truth has the power to liberate anyone from the chains of sin. Thus, it is the responsibility of every follower of Jesus to speak the truth, whether or not other people want to hear it. However, it should be done in a loving way.

Truth, in fact, has its benefits. It releases a person from feeling guilty and worried. It protects and guides, as well as brings people close to God. Psalm 145:18 assures, "The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth."

On the other hand, the Bible warns against failing to stand up for truth. It can seriously lead people to go astray. The atrocity of man suppresses the truth which arouses the wrath of God, which is clearly expressed in Romans 1:18-19: "The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them." Romans 2:8 also emphasizes, "But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger."

In the story, Kathleen faced up to Benjamin with much love. She cared so much for her cousin's family. Unfortunately, she earned the ire of Benjamin. Kathleen cannot be held accountable for Benjamin's reaction. Despite his denial, it remains Kathleen's duty to pray to God for the enlightenment of Benjamin. Psalm 86:11 invokes, "Teach me your way, O LORD, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name."
