Today we are looking at a very potent weapon of Satan -Spiritual burial.
Spiritual burial is a terrible weapon in the hand of the enemy.
It is the spirit that causes that which is active to become inactive. It causes that which is well to become sick; that which is good to turn bad. It is the spirit that causes what is alive to die; what is favourable to become unfavourable and what is advantageous becomes disadvantageous.
Spiritual burial causes what can see to become blind and that which is fruitful becomes fruitless. Through this spirit, a container of good things becomes a broken vessel, and that which is the head ends up becoming the tail!
In other words spiritual burial, otherwise known as the spirit of death and the grave reverses whatever is good, a testimony, divine promotion, source of joy and laughter and turns them into sorrow, shame and disaster.
The first manifestation of spiritual burial in the bible was in the Garden of Eden when Satan appeared to Eve.
“But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. “ (Genesis 3:3)
“And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:” (Genesis 3:4)
“For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” (Genesis 3:5)
Satan lied to Eve that they would not die. Man was not aware of spiritual death or what it meant.
Prior to then God made a good thing for Adam.
“And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help meet for him.” (Genesis 2:18)
But when Satan appeared on the scene and tempted Eve, through her he introduced spiritual burial into the life of Adam and subsequently man:
“And the man said, the woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. “ (Genesis 3:12)
The above reveals that:
Satan is the architect of spiritual burial.
Spiritual burial cannot come into a person’s life unless one opens up to it.
Spiritual burial is introduced to someone through something or someone close to the person.
There are many people who are presently alive physically but are actually dead spiritually. They are what you may refer to as the living dead. This phenomenon can be seen in the book of Timothy:
“But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.” (1 Timothy 5:6)
The truth is Satan is after the spirit of man, not the flesh. Once he can kill the spirit he has won the battle. It is the spirit that relates to God. The bible says that God is a spirit and He that will serve him must serve him in spirit and in truth.
What Satan did to Adam and Eve was to kill their spirit man.
Another example of a person that was alive but spiritually dead is that of
Abimelech. He did not know He was dead. God had to tell him.
“But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold; thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man's wife. “(Genesis20:3)
Abimelech introduced the spiritual death into his life when he took Abraham’s wife!
Before something can be ascertained dead within a person it means:
- Something must have ceased living within.
-something alive before must have been buried within.
-something active before must have gone inactive within.
Also note, God did not tell Abimelech that He would kill him; rather he told him he was already dead! This means that something must have happened to Abimelech that he was not aware of. Let us look at what another verse says about him.
“So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bore children.
For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of
Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham's wife. “(Genesis 20:17-18)
So God had caused the reproductive organs of Abimelech and his wives to cease functioning without them realising it!
He was a wealthy king, but he was dead. His entire household was dead but he did not know;
You could be wealthy but dead.
You could be successful but dead.
You could be a minister, a pastor of even a bishop but dead. The book of Ecclesiastics states:
For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion. (Ecclesiastics 9:4)
Another fact that we need to consider is that the enemy could conspire and bury a person alive. This may be seen in the story of Joseph.
“And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.19) And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.20) Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.:21) And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.22) And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.23) And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him;:24) And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.:25) And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.26) And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?:27) Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content28) Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.29) And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.:30) And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whither shall I go31) And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood32) And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son's coat or no.33) And he knew it, and said, It is my son's coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.34) And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.35) And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.36) And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, and captain of the guard.”
From this story we can see that first of all Joseph’s brothers threw him inside a pit. This represents the grave or spiritual burial.
Next, they sold him to Ishmaelites, the son of the bondwoman. Joseph became a slave to the dead He became dead.
As if this was not enough, Joseph was taken to Egypt. As far as God is concerned Egypt is the land of the spiritually dead. The land of the grave!
In Egypt he was set up and thrown into prison.
With Joseph thrown into a pit (spiritual burial) , sold into slavery and taken to the land of the dead (the grave) he was subsequently thrown into prison. His brothers had literally achieved their objective of ensuring he was spiritually dead and buried!. They had conducted a multiple spiritual burial on his life.
The next step Joseph’s brothers took was to announce his obituary. Joseph’s brethren brought his obituary before their father. They asked him whether he could identify his coat of many colours.
In those days there were no pictures and the only way a dead man could be identified in the absence of his body were the clothes he wore!
What they did amounted to asking their father whether he could recognise the clothes of this dead man?
From that moment on they pronounced Joseph dead. They had proclaimed his obituary. No wonder later, while talking about Joseph, Jacob referred him as dead. His brothers had already pronounced him so:
“And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring down my grey hairs with sorrow to the grave.” Genesis 42:38
And likewise, when his brothers referred him in Egypt (not realising who they were actually talking to!) they said:
“And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him.” (Genesis 44:20)
Joseph literally means Jehovah increases: but at that moment he began to decrease– He became a broken vessel. His case was similar to that of the Psalmist who declared:
“I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel.” (Psalm 31:12)
Many people are alive but dead. Though they are still on the face of this earth they are being treated as if they no longer exist. A person falls under this category if:
Members of your family refer to you as virtually untraceable though they know where you are. They conclude that you are dispensable and treat you with contempt. When they refer to such people they make statements such as “He’s been in London for years doing only God knows what. I am sure he will end up dying there. I cannot see him coming home again.”
When members of your family say things like” Even if she was here it would not make much difference. She won’t be able to contribute much anyway other than add more confusion. We might as well do without her” Such statements are designed to indirectly pronounce the person as spiritually dead!
The good news however is that our God is the God of the living, not the dead.
The bible states:
He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err. (Mark 12:27)
Likewise, in Matthew we read: I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob (Matthew 22:32)
This is why whenever God comes in contact with anything that is dead, it must live.
When God visited and turned Joseph situation around those who claimed he was dead bowed down to him. Your enemies that are proclaiming you dead will bow down unto you in the name of Jesus.
This is also why in Ezekiel 37 the dry and dead bones, by the word of God came alive. Whatever Satan has declared dead in your life shall come alive today in the name of Jesus.
Likewise, anything that was dead when it crossed the path of Jesus came alive. Both Lazarus and the dead girl all lived when they encountered Jesus. When they met with the God of the living not the dead.
There are many things that can be living but dead.
A person may be living but dead.
A person business may be living but dead.
A person’s dream, vision or divine mandate may be living but dead. But whenever any of these come in touch with the power of God they must surely live again.
On a final note there are certain cases where some powers must die for certain people to rule and reign spiritually. The bible states:
“In the year that King Uzziah died I saw also the Lord” Isaiah 6:1
Why does the bible relate these two incidents together? Because if King Uzziah did not die, Isaiah would not have seen the Lord
We can see a similar trend as revealed in the book of Chronicles:
(1 Chronicles 1:44) And when Bela was dead, Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his stead.45)And when Jobab was dead, Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his stead. 46)And when Husham was dead, Hadad the son of Bedad, which smote Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his stead: and the name of his city was Avith 47) And when Hadad was dead, Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his stead. 48) And when Samlah was dead, Shaul of Rehoboth by the river reigned in his stead. (1 Chronicles 1: And when Shaul was dead, Baalhanan the son of Achbor reigned in his stead49) And when Baalhanan was dead, Hadad reigned in his stead: and the name of his city was Pai; and his wife's name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mezahab. 50) And when Jobab was dead, Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his stead.
There are certain people that have vowed we will never be what we are divinely designated to be. Such people have sworn that the fulfilment of our destiny would be over their dead bodies, In such cases there is no way out for one to spiritually live again other than for such people to die. A clear example is seen concerning Paul:
“And he said, The Jews have agreed to desire thee that thou wouldest bring down Paul to morrow into the council, as though they would enquire somewhat of him more perfectly.” But do not thou yield unto them: for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, which have bound themselves with an oath, that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him: and now are they ready, looking for a promise from thee. (Acts 23:20-21)
Here, the bible makes it clear that these men had entered into an oath. They laid down their lives as a surety that Paul must die. This act was not approved by Paul, neither was it did with his knowledge or consent but they did it anyway. In such a situation, Paul had no choice. He could not break their oath. He could only save his own life and allow them to suffer the fate of their decision. You cannot plead for mercy over such a case. Whoever vows to die rather than allow God’s children to rule and reign must die!
It is like the case of a sister who attends one of our branches in Spain. The sister and her husband live in Spain but her three children are still in Nigeria. They live with the sister’s elder sister (their aunty) in the village. Day in, day out the sister was told how her daughters are maltreated by their aunt. Though, she sends money regularly her sister denies the children basic things. Life became miserable for the children.
On one occasion, while on leave at work, this sister traveled to Nigeria. She arranged for her two eldest daughters to attend a boarding school. That way they no longer had to live their aunty. (Though she still sent money through her.) The youngest however was not old enough to attend the boarding school and still had to put up with her aunt. None of the children were granted the required papers to in their quests to join their parents in Spain.
Before returning from her trip to Nigeria the company where this sister worked sacked her. She was at home for a year without a job. Within this period she constantly dreamt about seeing herself in the village. Or, at times, she would dream of seeing herself inside a coffin or buried in the grave! In addition to this her husband was sick and bed ridden, and although he was healed, for a whole year he was certified unfit to work by the doctor.
While in Nigeria, the sister purchased mobile (cell) phones for her daughters. While she freely spoke to those in the boarding school her sister took the phone away from the youngest. Each time she called the sister requesting to speak to her youngest daughter her request was turned down. Till one day her sister told her to forget about her youngest daughter:” Those in the boarding school are your children. This (mentioning the youngest daughters name) is no longer your daughter. She is now mine. You must accept this fact or else…” This was a statement made by an elder sister of the same biological parents to her own sister, despite the fact that she had her own children!
The sister in Spain, not knowing what to do, hurriedly agreed. She said a strong sense of fear always griped her whenever she spoke to her elder sister and she did not know how to respond. She left the matter like that until she listened to a message similar to this.
She was counseled and told not to agree with what her sister said concerning her daughter. She was given prayers similar to the ones attached to this message and asked to say them, fasting for seven days.
At the end of thefasting and prayer programme the sister had a dream. She dreamt that an angel appeared to her and asked whether she wanted those responsible for the problems in her life to die. She replied in the affirmative.
The angel told her that they were seven. He asked her the same question again and once again she replied in the affirmative. According to the sister all of a sudden the scene in the dream changed. There was pandemonium in her village , followed by a report that a relative of hers died. Before you knew it another relative of hers died and then, yet another one. She was then told that the next person on the death list was the main person- her elder sister!
The sister then cried out in the dream. She said she no longer wanted those responsible for her predicament to die. At this point she woke up sweating.
She then called and narrated her dream. She was asked what she wanted to be done. She said that one should help pray that her relatives would not die as revealed in her dream- especially her sister!
It was explained to her that her relatives, as revealed, had entered into a covenant over her life. In fact, they had actually programmed the spirit of death and the grave into her life and this was what was responsible for the difficulties she experienced.
The sister was told she had to make a choice: to have pity on those, who out of envy, had sworn to destroy her (this was despite the fact that she struggled to send money to them in the village) or, to continue her prayers and let those that had to die for her destiny to move forward to die.
The sister got the message. I pray you will get yours.
Please take the following prayer points:
Any power that has vowed to die instead of allowing me to rule and reign, what are you still waiting for? Die in the name of Jesus.
Anything that belongs to me, that is experiencing spiritual burial, come alive now, in the name of Jesus.
Oh Lord, arise and manifest you resurrection power in my situation.
I reverse every verdict of spiritual burial over my life and destiny in the name of Jesus.
Oh Lord, let every power of the grave over my life perish in the name of Jesus.
Fill in the gaps with the options provided:
You coffin designed for my ……………………………swallow your owner and roast to ashes in the name of Jesus.

Postscript: Repent and believe, Remember Hell is real Heaven is real.(Matthew 11:23) No matter how long we spend here on earth it cannot be compared to the time we shall spend in eternity. Hebrews 12:14 states: Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.Jesus is the way, truth and life. No man cometh to God except through Him. (John 14:6)
