A woman was brewing her favorite blend of coffee. She carefully poured the hot java in her favorite mug and headed for the family room where she had every intention of snuggling into her favorite chair, reading her favorite book, while slowly sipping her favorite coffee. But, on the way there, the mug slipped from her fingers and crashed to the floor, shattering the mug and splashing coffee across the recently washed kitchen floor. Her husband, seeing the exasperated look on her face and wanting to offer some encouragement, stated cheerily, “Well, at least the house smells like Starbucks now.”
Life is chock full of discouraging moments. We can barely trod through a single day without stumbling on an emotional groundhog hole. For many of us, frustration, disgust, hurt, disappointment, discouragement, and defeat are all part of our daily journey. Sometimes life seems like that first hill of a roller-coaster. All is going great. Thing’s are moving up, prospects are looking good. But we know in the back of our hearts that just over the top, any time now, life is going to take a screaming plunge. Let’s face it, life is hard. Rarely do we stay on top of the hill for very long.
So how do we deal with this? How do we find our way to Starbucks after seeing our plans shattered and our hopes and dreams splashed across the floor of failure? In Matthew 11:28-29 Jesus says, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you . . . and you will find rest for your souls.” Regardless of our circumstance, Jesus offers rest. He offers to carry the weight of our burden for us and free us from the bondage of discouragement.
Are you wandering the streets of despair desperately seeking Starbucks? I know someone who knows the way, and he’ll even carry your load for you . . . Jesus.
