Multitasking has quickly become an acquired attribute necessary, in society today, to “get it all done.” But, is multitasking the most astute way to complete all of our daily processes, flawlessly and in less time? I assert that there is a great potential for imbalance as some tasks will inevitably be left unmastered or deemed habitually substandard. Balance is key to living a life full of vigor, resolve and one that embraces a heightened sense of accomplishment.
Over the years I have learned from such imbalances - having been so grossly involved in an activity or project; I watched the weighing scale plunge into a downward spiral. The activity that consumed most of my time was the culprit. In an effort to regain equilibrium, I would multitask to counteract gross negligence. It didn’t work! Frustration, annoyance, and anger soon led to bouts of helplessness and sadness.
Conviction soon led to confession and repentance and I subsequently began to seek God through prayer and studying His Word. As I read and studied, my attention was drawn to two biblical personalities that scripture plainly illustrates. One saint is Martha (the sister of Mary). In Luke 10, the Bible tells of how this faithful servant became so absorbed in preparation for our Lord that she missed the most needful and good part –fellowship and intimacy with Jesus.
I too had a similar mindset-complete this activity or that and then I would have more time for my relationship with Jesus. It seemed reasonable! Basically, I inadvertently viewed my relationship with Jesus from the periphery, rather than as my focal point.
However, as the imbalances grew, so did my aggravation and disappointment.
The other biblical personality, Paul, captured my attention as well. While Paul traveled and ministered, primarily to the Gentile population, he was very careful to allow the Holy Spirit to provide a balance to his journeys. In Acts 16:9-10, Paul immediately went to Macedonia to preach the gospel after having a divine vision and instructions to do so. His whole ministry embraced balance as the Holy Spirit led him in planning his journey and ministry.
Paul may have had a desire to journey in a certain direction, but being prompted by the Spirit, he –on more than one occasion-ventured in another direction. In Romans 1:13, Paul writes that he had planned to visit the saints in Rome, but was hindered until he had finally made his visit. So even though it may appear that Paul was jagged or indecisive (in his journeys), we know that he had balance because the Holy Spirit led him.
I’ve learned that a life that stems from and begins with an intimacy and closeness with Christ is one that displays true balance-regardless of how others view our actions. I now regularly ask the Lord, as Job did in Job 31, to “let me be weighed in an even balance that God may know mine integrity.” We should sift our activities and routines through His Word and let Him weigh our dealings to ensure that they are wrought in Him lest we labor in vain.
