The Bible defines sin as "transgression of the law"(1 John 3:4). But is sin just behavioral or is it our nature? Again the Bible states in Psalm 51, that "in sin was I shaped and in sin did my mother conceive me".
The simplest way to view sin is to view a tree. Sin is the root, and each of the specific sinful actions are the branches. Because we are a morally relativistic society, we tend to categorize sin in degrees. But is this God's view?
Eminent Christian theologian and apologist Ravi Zacharias said, "It is not the volume of sin that sent Christ to the cross, but the fact of sin". A stain on an article of clothing would vex us regardless of it's size.
We must move away from the mentality of simply pruning the branches. We must, with the blood of Christ uproot the whole tree. We're not sinners because we behave sinfully, we behave sinfully because we're sinners.
No matter haw much we say we are cleaning up our lives. Time doesn't forgive sin, there is no statute of limitations in God's court. Even if we do not commit sinful acts, we have it within our nature the potential to sin, something God does not share.
When I ask someone if they've kept God's Law, they say..well I'm trying. To quote Yoda from Star Wars, " There is no try...there is do and do not". Because God can view our hearts and thoughts as well as our actions, we can never erase that potential to sin no matter how hard we TRY to clean the outside.
God loving us knew this...and gave us a way to break the surly bonds of sin. He gave us his only Son, Jesus, who paid a debt he did not owe, because we owe a debt we cannot pay. may God Bless all of us and through His Holy Spirit, convict our hearts of our sin so that we may turn to Jesus our savior.
Do not just prune the branches, uproot the tree. Do not just clean the outside of the cup but the inside as well for God desires "truth in the inward parts"(psalm 51:6), but this cleansing is only possible when you first look at the dirt (sin) and acknowledge it's presence. Then you wash it clean with the blood of Christ. "Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow"(Isaiah 1:18).
Remember God is not a moral relativist, and Christ didn't die for sins that are easy to forgive. He died for them all. Past, present, and future. Come to Him! Cleanse your soul! Uproot the tree!
