RHYTHMS OF A LOVE SONG - OBI FELIX - ABRAHAMS
INTRODUCTION
This collection of verses is not about mere love
Not about a bouquet of roses and bloomy petals
It is not about caresses and mumbled words
It exhales passion, but not sensual passion
It is about love, too divine to be ephemeral
Mere humans dream of it but have it not give
Except they have received it from God into their hearts
For love can be love only if it is divine
Love is love when it looks out of the encased self
To give to another, than store in a vault
This I long for, as God has so given all men.
The poems in this volume are efforts at contemplating the theme of
God’s love for mankind and reflects the author’s preoccupation with the
mystery of this love and God’s relationship with his creation. It is my
prayer that these poems will strike a good note in your unrestrained
quest for knowing and celebrating God’s love for you.

DEDICATION
To all the Lord’s soldiers, pilgrims, missionaries and martyrs who had
suffered reproach, want, hurts and great loss of their personal
ambitions and precious blood in their resolve to carry the message of
God’s love to the peoples of the World in need of love.
1. THE BELOVED
Lost in my dreams
I saw you waiting
To loan me back to life
I thought I would rouse on my own
But failed with no hope to live again
Till you came around
And revived me back to life
I am stuck with you for life
We are hooked and hooked for life
(June, 2001, Kano, Nigeria.)
2. SO UNWORTHY
I sought for life
Beyond the confines of life
But saw death at the fringes of life
I sought for pleasure
Within the limits of pleasure
But was stuck within the bounds of sorrow
My life ebbed, waned and ticked away
Bound by vice, divorced by virtue
A slave of myself and the desires of self
Then you found me Lord
So unworthy of you, your love
Steeped in dross, burnished with mire
Yet you found me, father
When I knew you not
You stretched forth your hands
Those immortal cords of love
Have caught and hurled me out gently
Out of the depths of sin and death
Washed, cleansed, transformed, justified!
Oh for your Love
For your Grace
For your Mercy
For your Love
Dear Father,
For your love, grace, mercy, name
Will my life be spent
Will my blood be poured
Will my life be saved
Will my life be blessed
(Dec. 2000, Jattu-Uzairue, Edo State)
3. ENTHRALLED
Let the world know
That I really love you
Let them know, my Lord
That you enthrall me
May they feel the waves, the flow
And the palpitations of my heart
As I contemplate your love for me
The love that took you far
Away from pleasure and fame
To the gruesome death on the cross
Your love has enthralled me
Now I am pulled to your heart
Drawn away from sin and its pull
(Lagos, Nigeria, Feb, 2002)
4. NONE LIKE IT - A STORY OF TRUE LOVE
‘Twas love that saw the birth of eternity
Long before time was created
And perfected to rule man as an umpire
Then was this script unfurled and read
This story of love so strange to man
A love so pure and vain free
‘Twas for love’s sake He came
And for this love He gave all
Nothing withholding, e’en His dear life
For when He looked back at me
He found I had no treasure to lease
Yet He withdrew not from me
And gave all that I might have his all
‘Twas for her He had come
At the peril of His noble name, his reputation
For her sake He lost all dignity
And was housed with the lowly and mean
So He can court, woo and win her love
‘Twas for her, He faced humiliation
She was hideous, a disdainful statue
A woman forsaken, with no lover or master
From the quagmire He picked her up
As uncomely as the dead toad
Left alone rotten beyond redemption
Twas in this state He found her
Divested of her virtuous treasures, in shame
But where they loathed her, He loved her
Applying healing salves to her sored heart
He cleaned and wiped away the debris, her past
He loved her more than she knew love to be
He paid her dowrie a hundred fold
Not with riches, nor his sweat drops
He gave the only thing, the all He had
For in loving her, He died, not of heartbreak
He loved to die, He would that she lived
Twas for her sake that he died
Yet she mourned not, not ashamed of her cloaks
But she flew and eloped with a new lover
One that promised her heaven within hell
But how would He ever let her alone
In the arms of a sucker, a lover of sham
For His very life has been lodged in hers
His arms are ever wide open
To welcome her all over again
Though she promised not to be unfaithful
Yet He wants her all the more, for His love
‘Twas for this love that onlookers wondered,
“What a love seeth our eyes!”
“There is none ever like it”
“We need this kind of love, so perfected
“For there is None Like it!
(Kano, Nigeria, 2001)
5. MORE THAN A MYSTERY
You didn’t retract because of our ugliness
We were full of stench and uncomely
You didn’t turn us back
Though we were hideous, clothed with sin
You took the pains and shame of my death
When the jagged nails wrenched your palms
Long before they mocked and scowled at you
When you could have lived your life
You released your breath for keeps
The earth quaked, the thunder struck
The sun and moon were lulled to slumber
So they won’t see your body deprived of heaven’s light
They wrapped you in a shroud
Caged you were in a tomb with guards
They thought your body would rot
But you slept in peace amidst all darkness
For you knew it was for a while
The guards slept thinking it’s over
The sentries laid down in slumber
But within the dark prison, it quaked and tussled
One man stood in defiance of the captor
A rebellion never known in hell
All Hell quaked when He took life’s keys
The gates opened, the captives poured out
In a show of triumph over the adversary
Free from sin and death, free for life
And this is more than just a mystery

6. IN WONDER
Sometimes the wind blows
But the flowers remain unruffled
Nor the trees astir
To dance the tune of angles
Why will my heart grow sullen?
Not warmed by this love
You have so flushed into me
Which flows unhindered, never quenched
Why will the earth peoples wonder?
If truly you loved as they heard
With all the encumbrances they face
The evils they cannot punish
The wars, the thirst, the hunger and poverty
The deaths, diseases, destruction and disasters
Which they have seen all their lives
No doubt your love is sure and real
For I see a glimpse of it amidst the darken around
In the beautiful sunset up the sky
Which bids me cheerio, to rest and sleep
The showers of love that soothe my skin
In the symphony of the waves at Bar beach
The unfeigned smile of the poor child at Orile
The freshness of the green lawn
The rhythmic flow of the still waters
For all these we can’t deny
If we can see all these
Yet remain ungrateful to God
Asking for more, but not giving more
Then we’ll keep seeking, and empty within
Hoping to buy this love with riches
(6:20pm, 25/8/2001, Lagos)
7. SWEETER THAN ALL
So sweet sounds your lovely name
So refreshing is your warm presence
Sometimes it feels like a goose-bumpy hill
All over my skin, yet not a goose bump
Sweet Holy spirit, how I love you
So dear you are to me
So gentle and kind are you
Yet I neglect and forsake you often
Dearie spirit Divine, Sweeter than all
Sweeter than the best of lovers
Your love is not spiced with guile
So pure, true and flawless are you
How I long to know you more
Lost in a spiritual embrace with you
Deep in fellowship unknown to mortals
For you long for me more than I think you do
You are here for me, to love me
To show me all about Jesus
And all about me, which I know not
Sweet spirit Divine, I am here
My heart yearns and craves
For more of you which I’m yet to know
I am restless, longing not yet satisfied
Till I drink the fullness of your fountain
Which flows like a refreshing stream of life
Sweet Holy Spirit, Lover of my life
Keep my heart aflame for you
Let no other maiden or men servant
Cart me away from you
I am yours, and you are mine
Lost in your presence I love to always be
(11:40am, 27/8/2001, Lagos)
8. IN LOVE WITH YOU
I have seen the rose petals in their bloom
I have heard the chirping song of birds
As they fly wing-to-wing to their nests
Away from the view of hunters
I have seen what men call love
The heaving and beatings of the heart
The sparkling glow of the eyes
The slow cadence of lovers in a garden
The songs of the sensuous voices
So celebrated in this fading kingdom
But do the rose petals last long?
Their leaves char, and the blooms fade
Their sweet nectar goes stale and sour
The heart broken and a life wasted
For a fleeting pleasure offered by feigned love
How different you are Lord
The roses in your garden are ever red
Their leaves lush and green, the thorns so smooth
Your love does not run in seasons
Its tide flows like an unending river
To everyone, to every heart, and to every soul
A love more electric than a current
One more than a mystery, yet a reality
Too deep to be grasped or understood fully
One not duplicated, yet multiplied in heaven
To reach everyone whose heart longs for it
Father, just to be in love with you
Is all that I seek and desire
To be all that you want me to be
To bring you joy all of my days
To share your love to all people
Nothing withholding, nothing retaining
Till all is expended and emptied on others
(12:10am, 28/08/2001, Lagos)
9. YOU ARE HERE
In moments like this
When unanswered questions
And unresolved conflicts
Flow unhindered through my path
I look up to you alone for help
Knowing that my eyes can’t see farther
My ears understand only what they can hear
And my heart, that which is sown into it
How can I be quizzed all alone?
When you are always there for me
You are the solution to every question
The last word on every conflict
The unpaid umpire of reality and life
How can I despair amidst hope?
Nay! I will fear not nor be stunned
For you are there for me always
To silence all dissident voices within
And to help me triumph over them
For your name, your glory and love (2:05am, 10/09/2001, Lagos)
10. IN HASTE
In haste I rushed out ‘tis morn
Not even a hushed word mumbled I
To thank you for the rest and peace
Which lulled me into sleep last night
In haste I rushed my prayers
Your word I let stay away from my eyes
Your voice was loud and clear
But my ears were dull and rowdy
To even know you had a word for me
In haste I rushed into the bus
Stride pass those that beckoned with tearful eyes
For help, for pittance to borrow for a meal
But I heard them not, looking not their way
Yet your eyes have been on me all day
To watch, to care, to love me
If you rush ever out on me in hate
What would my life have been like?
The clouds of gloom would have arisen
The sun would have blinked and slumbered
Too drowsy to warm up my life
In all my rush, you stay on still
Father, teach me your poise
That I may learn to be still
And to remain calm amidst these storms (12 midnight, 13/09/2001, Lagos)
11. QUIET NUDGINGS
Lord it was you that nudged me
And prodded my heart to slow down
To follow the tip you gave
But I ignored you, and took another way
You overlooked that and still called me
I answered as though I heard you
But my actions proved that my ears were closed
For I did what my heart had wanted
Now I wish I had followed your leading
I’d not have suffered all these lost
The stress, the wastage, the thoughtlessness
Which sickened me like a stubborn offspring of disobedience
Lord to snub your voice is a trap
Obeying you opens the peaceful doorway
That leads to the land of treasure
Which those that obey you will inherit (12:45am, 19/09/2001, Lagos)
12. LIKE A MIST
Your love comes on fresh every morn
And like the dew that refreshes the lawn
It comes on gently like the mist
Which calms the soul every morn
Like a mist your loves comes daily
Not delayed nor detained in its descent
To flush out the staleness of yesterday
Till the meadows have drank their fill of heaven’s dew
Your love comes on every morn
More refreshing than the sweet breeze
More soothing than a touch so gentle
More tender than the stroke of tender grasses
Yet so strong and mightier than all
In your love will I trust all day
When I recline in sleep or keep a vigil
Thro’ the furnaces I must visit in life
For I know you’ll always accompany me
As I work, walk and wait for you
(24/9/2001, Lagos)
13. YOU LINGER
I tried to stretch to the horizons
To know if I can see their limits
My imagination was overstretched
But it could only the see the coastline
Nor discern the ends that limit them
Then I thot about how big you are
Yet you fill a vessel so small
And your glory overflows all around
So big are you, filling the earth in its vastness
Yet small enough to inhabit humans
We have tried to stifle your voice
To shut you out of our affairs
But you know better than we all
For if you ever close your eyes on us
We’ll be misery-laden, inhabited by darkness
You linger on and on with us still
When the beat is sonorous and sweet
When our joy is shut out by a dirge
We can’t live our lives without you
For only in you are we complete
(12:35am, 6/10/2001, Lagos)
14. STUCK TO YOU
When you told me to abide in you
I knew you told me all truth
But I seem to play with this truth
If not, why did I keep you out all the while?
Every morning I just muter a sound
And rush out to the streets for mammon
And after all the race of the day
I come back deflated, too weak to talk with you
This goes on without your protest
But I am no better without you
Your voice now sounds like an echo
Too faint to be discerned or headed
I am now full of heaviness, body in pains
Dear father, I want to draw nigh
Closer than I ever have or could to you
Let me get so stuck to you
Till the encumbrances of this life
Will no longer stand between us again
For only in you is my life complete
(4:35pm, 11/10/2001,Lagos)
15. PRICE TAG
Sometimes, I have really wondered
What our lot would really have been
If you were to charge us in gold
For all the free things you have given us
What can we pay for all these?
The air that can’t be merchandized,
Unlike the patented inventions of men
Do I think of the beautiful blooms?
Or the flashing sight of the clouds above
Which you gave us without a price tag?
Had you asked us to pay for our sins?
Our whole lives would not be worth a deposit
Nor can we raise a collateral of value
For all we hold dear fade so fast
Rather, you chose to die for our sins
When we all deserved death and its fangs
Lord, we can’t pay you back
Nor be able to thank you enough
If only we could mortgage our lives
To love you and serve you with no price tags
(11:50pm, 11/10/2001, Lagos)
16. LEAN ON HIM
Through the stresses of life
The disappointments, the failures and misses
I am learning to rest my head
On the shoulders of Him
That bore all my sins on the cross
When I feel I can’t go through
Nor be able to shoulder the burdens of life
I have one who puts me through
Every mountain, hill, valleys and plains
Which stand on my way to his heart
As I walk through this path of destiny
I have had to retrace my steps
Back to him each time I slipped,
And when I thought he gave me a nod
But he only watched me in silence
Now I am learning to wait on you
For every step I need to take
Lord, let your ways be as light before me
So I would miss the bumps of life
That your peace may reign within me
(1:40am, 20/2/2002)
17. BE STILL (Ps 46:10)
When I looked up
The sky looked dried up
And the clouds ferried away
By the fiery winds of life
I looked choked up
Despair at loggerheads with hope
The battlefield was within
My heart was heavy-laden and worry-full
When I looked up again
I saw the smiles of the stars
The grace of the dove above me
Thus was I assured of your undying love
That you cared deeply for me
For in the midst of all the fear
The storms, the raging and fiery waves
You told me to keep still
To fear not and to have faith till the end
I could have sulked in despair
But your words resounded within
I was assured of hope again
I am now at peace within me
Amidst the threats of the storms of life (1:40am, 20/2/2002, Lagos)
18. NOT A LONER
Ever since I met you
I have had no reason to look back
For long before you accepted me
I was trapped within myself
Unsure of what life held for me
Then you stepped into my path
I was touched, truly transformed
My life was changed forever
You’ve changed my person, my mentality
Your breath of life has teased me
When I look back to my past
And recall the way first time
Your love confronted me, I shudder
For you came down so low
To raise me up so high
Your words have given me assurance
Those sweet sounds escort me daily
As I trace my way around
They comfort me when despair stirs up
And soothe me against every disappointment
I can’t stop wondering why
You just love me this way
No other has shown me this kind
Which you have made me savour fully
This I love, but do love you much more
(2/9/2001,Lagos)
19. NO ONE ELSE
When I think of where I am
And where you brought me
My heart bubbles like pellets of joy
It looks more like a dream
For what you’ve shown me
About my future with you
Enthuse me beyond measure
When everything seems to turn
The wrong way and against me
When every friend turns against me
That is the time your voice blares louder
To silence the anxiety and care
So my heart will dwell in peace
You are ever there to help me
Because you are there with me
The whole world may divorce me
But you will stay on to care
Like no other would ever do
(30/01/2002, Lagos)
20. IN STEP WITH THE FATHER
I followed you along a path
Quite unknown it was to me
One so strange to be uncertain
But it was a gentle one you made for me
I followed you on
Not sure of its very end
But you told me not to fear
That great things lay ahead
E’en though I saw not a mirage of it
Then you opened my eyes
To see the prince you crowned me to be
I was stunned, so bemused at what I saw
The star you made me to be
A great prince, a suzerain ruler of the cosmos
Now I can go along this path
Not afraid what lay ahead
Your plans for me are so great
I’m yet to see the farthest point
Where I will be in a moment of time
(17/09/2001,Lagos)
21. LIGHT BLAZED FORTH
Light blazed forth as life
Right out of Bethlehem
Many wondered in awe
Many gazed in fear
But the light blinked not
The light blazed with brightness
The darkness around shrunk in fear
From its reign of generations past
And the dark corners of men’s hearts
Were stripped bare like uncovered skeletons
That light kept its course
Not floundered by the very heap of darkness
That had grown like a hill over men
Who had watched in helpless fear
As this evil of darkness disembodied their strength
This light blazed forth from heaven
Many feared its life’s course
But it glared dazzling at darkness
Not for one moment did it blink nor slumber
Darkness thus gave way for this light
By bits, cracks, chips and chunk
It formed a big heap of rubble
Now men can see God’s light again
And this, darkness cannot just comprehend
(10/12/2001, Port Harcourt)
22. RAINSTORM
Without a hush
Not with warning
I got caught up
In a deluge of flood
After a stormy raindrop
Without a boat to cruise
Not with men to paddle through
I was swept along
By this deluge of hate
Through the grooves and pits
With a bang
Not without a thud so fierce
I war dropped in haste
From the loftiest of heights
To soar through all nothingness to nowhere
Lost I thought I was forever
Till I found you at nowhere
Waiting for me where no one lived
Knowing I would end up again
In your loving arms after the rainstorm
(21-02-2002, Lagos)
23. A HEAP OF WAVES
Like a river that flows
Gracefully back to the oceans
My heart is on a trip
Searching through the paths
Back to your heart
From where it was excised out
Long before my being was shaped
But there are many mountains
Thickets, torn bushes, and spiked tracks
That I often must pass through
And these I dread as a child
Not wanting any bumps
In this journey back home
I have heard you say to me
“With me, the mountains are like
The smooth thoroughfares of heaven
The torn bushes you trudge through
Are the lawns of the golden city
Dread them out, walk through them!”
Yeah my heart is on a journey
Back to the place of abode
Where you have left enough room
For everyone who longs
To be where you are
To be all they can ever be
(12:50am, 16/12/2001, Lagos)
24. FOUNTAIN OF LIFE
The vastness of the oceans
Cannot compare to your fountains
Which refresh me each time
I come into your presence
Singing and rejoicing before you
In adoration and worshipful reverence
Each time I feel your touch
All of me, and all within me ignites
And I take a trip upward
Not wanting any of the things around me
Which I labour to acquire as goods
Things that bar me from you
Lord in your presence
There I choose to be
Ever drawing nearer to you
For you are ever near
Desiring this intimacy
With me your child
There I choose to linger
Though the pressures mount
To press around and choke me
For my heart will ever press out
To reach out for the fountain
Which refreshes my life forever
As it flows forth from you
(4:15pm, 16/12/2001, Lagos)
25. ENCASED IN YOUR LOVE: (Adapted from Psalm 139:17-18)
In the coolness of the early morn
Your gentle arms roused me out of the swaddle
That had encased me all through the night
In the quietness of the milieu, I heard a sound
The voices of your angels rehearsing
The symphony of the shrub dwellers
All giving the dawn a peace alien to dusk
I feel the showers all over me
As of the dew over the tender greens
That checks the harshness of the sunrays
On mankind, the beasts and plant kind
When the umbrella above has punctured
Your love escorts me each day
Through the valleys, cliffs and rough edges
When I should have crumbled from failure
You served as the wedge, my fortress
When I thought of tripping over in despair
Your hands were not seen to be touched
Yet I felt their touch as you held me close
To your heart, to your warming touch
How can I draw away from you?
When my feet are stuck deep in you
You’ve held me so tenderly close
I just can’t break your loving grip
This knot of love around me
Holding me bound to you
Yet forever loosened from the grip of self
Sometimes it feels as though I’m trapped
And I long to escape into the Island of vanity
Where there are no absolutes or watchdogs
But the thought of breaking free from your love
Which has held me from breaking down
Keeps me bound to you still
Can I ever be free from your loving grip?
I now know it’s for all eternity
Not just a cycle of life and death
But an enduring love of generations past
That will guide me past the future
As I journey thro’ this ball of earth
Where I shall my coat cast away
When my role in the drama of life is over
Thus fulfilling the destiny of eternity past
Deep in the hollow of your heart I lay
Enjoying the fullness of your touch
That makes me know you are real
E’en though I pass thro valleys
Or face the falling lava of mountains
I, in stillness will stand in safety
For you’re in the mountain, within the valleys
Though I can’t see the farthest of ranges
Where your love is taking me to
I would not an ache suffer
Nor a bruise nurse, for your love’s sake
The ever drawing, ever caring love
When I think I am far from you
You ripple from within all thro’ me
When I walk as though you forgot me
I hear that voice within the noise in my heart
“You’re not alone in this race, son!
Many have passed thro’ in triumph
O’er the mountain, in the caves and tunnels
When they lived in this encasement, my love
(4am, 12/9/2000, Benin city)
26. WORDS FROM HEAVEN (John 1:12, 2 Cor 5:17)
(Specially dedicated to my childhood friend, Joseph Iwuoha, after he got born again in 1999)
The words resounded, as I lay supine on my bed
Facing the serrated ceiling, looking beyond the sky
Deep in dreams, I thought about what I heard
Those words of comfort, woven with warmth and care
… You are loved, and my lovechild
I died for you way back
So you can live life to the fullest
Welcome to my castle, my very kingdom
You’re now a part of me, my heir.!
In my ragly raiment, looking sullen and dejected
Soaked in tears, but a drench of sorrow
The servants crowded me and stripped me
But my unwholeness they carted away
And when my eyes opened, I beheld a strange sight
A new man robed in princely colours
Unsure of what to do
I took the first step in awe
Cadence upon cadence, of majestic gait
Into the banqueting hall of joy
Looking like the seated saints in arrays
Who rose up and cheered me on
I then knew I was a different man
A member of the esteemed family of heaven
Whose abode must be on earth
Till the kingdom drains the rubbles on earth
(15/11/99, Benin city)
27. A NEW HOPE
All he could give was his sinful body
The much he offered was a bruised heart
For he had walked too far away his Lord
And sorrowfully lost in the trench of rebels
So lost he was in sin
Suffering its guilt and pains
Feeling estranged from the love covenant
And locked up within the heart by darkness
It was then you came around
To give him a new life and a hope
Wiping his tears and sins away
Now your joy guards his new heart
Your love broke through Lord
For when he should have been hated and abhorred
Your kindness melted his callous heart
And healed his seared heart
So he could be free to live again
(12/04/1999, Benin City)
28. THE FRAGNANCE OF LOVE
If the world would learn to forgive
If all of us would bear with another’s fault
If we can just swallow the hurts and pains
Then can we have a glimpse of love
If sworn enemies would live as friends
If we can shoulder burdens not ours
If we can let our differences unite us
Then can we savour the rich fragrance of love (8:40pm, 13/5/2001, Kano City)
29. ABODE OF LOVE
Nothing gives such an inner peace
No other joy can so be found
Neither would the mundane assuage such love
For its wellspring is unquenchable
Which flows from the throne room of God
` In peace I recline, lost in God
In hope I long for that abode of love
A peace beyond the imaginations of all eternity
Specially constructed according to the divine scales
For the lovely, obedient children of God
May I not lose sight of this ultimate land
Trudge, I would thro’ this world in this hope
Nothing pulling my eyes as they behold this heaven
Though delightful to the eyes, I would but snob
The glittering kingdoms that prode my heart
What is life without God?
What is love if it loses the divine flavour?
What is labour, save for His majestic Glory?
My soul, abhor the ephemerals of this cosmos
My spirit, relish in the unseen, the eternal
My body, lose sight of self to see clearly
For homebound we are now in Christ!
(22/7/96, Kano City)
30. PASSION FOR JESUS
Lord, the least thing I would desire
The worst thing I dread and abhor
Is to gravitate away from you
Drawn and pulled along by the pleasures of sin
Draw me closer, get me bound to you
Let nothing attract or distract me
Get me so focused on you alone
Climbing higher in realms of glory
To the peak of the mountain of your love
Where life is lived in all fullness
Dearest Lord, long I for this love
The love that took you from the throne
Yeah, from the cradle to the cross
Which no other ever could give
Love as made and patented in heaven
This love found only in you
So freely given to all men
Lord, this one thing I ask
May I so give this love to all?
Till the passion in Jesus is filled
With the love we’ve given others
