Short Stories
The crowds began to gather, as the performance was about to start. One could feel the tension in the air. It was electric with anticipation as the start of the program unfolded. There was a buzzing in the theater tonight, as people began to discuss what had happened last night when “The Reader” supernaturally read the thoughts of others. She never made a mistake and often brought to light secrets to the astonishment of the questionnaire.
The Lady, Mademoiselle, was called, wore a beaded hood, and was elegantly dressed in couture designed by the house of Dupree. Robin, who was the master of ceremonies would start by introducing Mademoiselle and explained why the hood was worn. She was unable to see the one asking questions or what was in their hand. The hood enabled her to be less distracted by the surroundings and the people in the audience.
It was rumored that the Lady was born in India and was gifted in the supernatural. Many times she would declare something about the future of the questionnaire, at times she would also refer to their past life.
Last night Mademoiselle invaded deeply into the past of the questionnaire mind. She informed him of a murder, which took place deep within the caverns of the chateau. The crime was committed over a handsome amount of money. She believes the money was hidden in one of the caverns. The entrance to the caverns was only assessable by an underground waterway. Only the master of the house knew where the exact spot lay at the bottom of the sea. All this information had been concealed from the family for many generations. The questionnaire knew nothing about what The Lady had told him. He became speechless!
The performances were scheduled for two hours segments since the sessions drained Mademoiselle. This evening people were wondering if the questionnaire of the night before would return. Would he again ask for her assistance to learn more information regarding to the vast fortune that she eluded too?
One could not hear their own conversation for the noise, which surrounded them. So many people speaking at the same time the auditorium was far from quiet. The house lights dimmed and Robin was seen walking toward the center of the stages. Now you could hear a pin drop as everyone stopped talking and paid attention to what he had to say.
“Ladies and gentlemen may I have your attention. We do not know as yet, if the gentlemen that came last evening to inquire of the vast fortune are coming back this evening. He seemed to wish to ask Mademoiselle some more questions. With the write up in newspaper today, the police have asked Mademoiselle more questions. She could only reply to the police with the facts she had given the gentlemen. Mademoiselle is not a fortune-teller and can only repeat the thoughts, which are given to her. We shall start this evening’s performance with a request given to us by a lady named Lillian. I have Ms. Lillian’s card in hand. Would the lady please stand? What would you wishes to ask Mademoiselle?”
As Robin addressed Ms. Lillian the wide blue velvet curtain opened unto the stage. On the platform was an Oriental rug of the finest weave underneath her chair. The Lady was sitting on a red velvet high-backed chair. It was fitted for royalty; she sat poised in a long flowing evening gown. “Good Evening, Mademoiselle, I trust you are well this evening”? “Yes, Robin I am ready to begin”!
“Ms. Lillian you want to inquire about a young man named Doug”?
“Yes, Robin, she replied. I am wondering where this relationship is going. Because I need to know if he is he reliable and trustworthy for, we are partners in business as well being as personally involved. I can not make a mistake the cost to me is too high”.
“Mademoiselle we are waiting for your response”.
“Madam, the reader responded in a firm manner. I see much discord in the near future with money changing hands. You will lose both your money and your heart if you continue. I can feel the disharmony, Madam. Of course it is your choice”.
Ms. Lillian on hearing this revelation turned ash white, The reader was startled as Lillian opened her red purse revealing a small revolver. Those sitting next to her wondered if she was going to use it. The reader stood to her feet, “Madam that would be a foolish thing to do! Have you not signed papers over to this man already giving him title to some of your business? He would win my dear. That is all he was after, power and money. One can always find another lover”. With this she sat down. One of the ushers escorted Ms. Lillian to a private sitting room.
Abruptly one of the doors in the back was flung open. The disheveled man ran up the aisle breathing heavily screaming, “Mademoiselle these men have come after me for the money. I don’t know how to find the money, the threatened to kill me, Lady”.
He certainly did not look like the composed gentleman of last night. He started to run up upon the stage toward the Reader. Robin said ”Just a minute young man if you wish to address the Reader you must go back in the audience. No one is allow on this platform”.
The gentleman continued to advance, he spoke to Mademoiselle as if she was the only one who could save him. Once again she stood up looking straight into his eyes she commanded him to be still. He stopped in his tracks.
“Yes, Mademoiselle, I am deeply sorry, I am terribly frightened”.
“Please stand in the audience and I will address you Sir, she replied”
As he sauntered to a front row seat provided for him because the house had been sold out for this performance, he then tried to collect himself as he sat down.
After a moment, The reader gently whispered to the young man, now seeing
He was composed “You may speak now”.
“Mademoiselle is there anyway you can help me in this matter?” I truly do not know what to do. These men came to my home demanding I get the hidden treasure. Perhaps they read the newspapers story, which was on the front page yesterday. I don’t know how to find the caverns beneath the chateau. I never lived there. I have inherited the estate, which I call the mausoleum. I am afraid for my life, my lady, truly”.
“At this moment there is nothing more I can tell you Sir, she addressed the frightened man. If more is given to me I will surely let you know if you will give your address to the usher. I am deeply sorry that these facts have caused discomfort in your life. I can only repeat what is given to me. Sometimes there are only fragments of information given, like a thimble full. As I said if I am given more I will gladly pass on the information to you”.
The poor man shrunk into the seat that was provided for him. He was bewildered and confused almost in shock. The interruption in the readings had disquieted the audience. Robin thought I must do something, he came to the front of the stage and announced, “This session was over one can plainly see Mademoiselle is completely exhausted. Her next performance will be held next Monday evening at 8:00 PM. I trust you will come back and see what other secrets she shall reveal. I wish everyone a good night”.
