What a blessing it is to know that our God shall supply all of our needs "according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus". Most people would read this and think money and wealth for themselves! During Paul's ministry, it was the church of Philippi who helped and understood the true meaning of giving and receiving. In fact they were the only church throughout all Macedonia who gave to the meeting of his necessities, (Philippians 4:15-16). Not for him to be rich and wealthy, not because he v.17 "desired a gift"; but for the fruit that abounds on our account. Which fruit is, the gospel of Jesus Christ! In other words, his needs would have been that of; food, clothing, oil for his lamp, writting utensils to spread the word and lodging. All for the glorifying of the Kingdom of God. Not that of a 5.4 million dollar home, a 20 million dollar jet and a 5 thousand dollar suit! Which is discussed in a further lesson called"Get your Jesus at 50% off!" But the necessities of ministry.
We learn a valuable lesson just in this one topic alone. We learn that; he who gives to those in the ministry of Jesus Christ, shall have their needs met. Not wants, but needs! Giving that to those who are not out for wealthy gain from you; but sincerely are concerned for Christ in the life of others. And doing everything they can to make sure people have a chance to receive him. V.19 of ch.4 applies to those who give. Not just being a Christian.; but giving to the ministers of Christ. NOTE: I would strongly recommend only giving to those who really are passionate of spreading God's word and not just trying to get money out of you through the use of extortion, "supposing that gain is godliness", (Matthew 23:25),(1 Corinthians 5:11),(1 Timothy 6:5-11).
What did Paul mean when he said," my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus"? First we must know what his riches are for us. For it is in this that our needs shall be supplied! As we study the word we learn in (Ephesians 1:7 and 2:4), that grace and mercy are a form of his riches. Also in (1 Timothy 6:18) we are to rich in good works. We learn that our joy is one of the riches we receive from God,(2 Corinthian 8:2). As well as in (Colossians 3:16) shows us that, Christ will dwell in us richly in all wisdom. God's riches for us are not that of wealth, money and power which is a god called 'Mammon' (Matthew 6:24); but rather that of mercy, grace, good works, joy and wisdom. It is these that are our needs. It is these riches through our trials, afflictions and poverty that bring us liberty by Christ, (2 Corinthians 8:2)! So you see, it is not the riches of this world that Paul is speaking of. It is the riches of Christ and by Christ from God (Philippians 4:19) that produces the fruit in us, (Philippians 4:17). All from the giving to the true ministers of God! Solomon with all his wisdom had this to say. "Labor not to be rich: cease from your own wisdom"(Proverbs 23:4). Our own wisdom shows us the laboring for the riches of this world. We are to "cease" from that and take on the wisdom of Christ. Which is not of this world; but of the Kingdom of God and Heaven. So when we help distribute the Gospel of Christ through our giving, we are gaining the wisdom of God through his doctrine. So give generously to the contributions of God's word,( Romans 12:6)! Also have the desire to do so, (2 Corinthians 8:10). But most importantly, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Thank you for taking the time to read this powerful truth of God's word!
