While listening to the account of how airline Captain "Sully" made a skillful landing within the Hudson River for his 154-passenger jetliner, and then how various NY rescue agencies all worked together so that not a single life was lost, a picture of something even more spectacular came to mind—something that speaks of the Biblical revelation of God and His rescue plan. Even as the Old Testament prophets publicly dramatized spiritual truths, today’s news events can be used by the Spirit of God to convey critical realities.
I am thankful, along with many, for the outcome of this near disaster. But for those who see a greater purpose and seek greater meaning from such events, let me share three brief Scriptural points that I feel are connected to this mid-January Hudson River landing.
This is not a lengthy message, just a sharing of some parallel points with eternal meaning. Allow the Holy Spirit to provide added truths.
1) A difficult choice for survival. “…Narrow is the way which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” –Matthew 7:14
Who would choose a river for a landing lane, when a distant airport is in sight? And who would choose to place their eternal trust in a Jew who died 2,000 years ago on a cursed cross?
2) A competent Captain. “In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” –Proverbs 3:6
There could not have been a more highly trained Captain available to pilot the plane in such an emergency situation-He wrote a manual on such stuff. Likewise, consider the Author of life, our Creator who has offered to help guide our lives-The Captain of our souls.
3) A cooperative rescue work. “So we being many are one body in Christ, and everyone members one of another.” –Romans 12:5
Some passengers had to merely step from a wing onto a waiting ship. Others boarded life rafts or had to be pulled from the water. It was amazing to see how all the various rescue agencies worked together. In a similar way, the world is waiting to see the church, Christ's Body, recognize both its unity and diversity in both proclaiming and demonstrating the message of salvation through Jesus Christ.
