Am I A Season?

The oceans are made up of it. The Dead Sea and Salt Lake in Utah have a higher concentration of it than any other place in the world. Some places here in the United States use this product to clear icy and snowy roads. Do you know what it is? Salt.

Salt is a season that is at once useful, well-known and absolutely essential for life. Salt has multiple functions, in fact the Internet cites over 60 uses!

As a season, nothing can beat salt for its versatility. Baking a cake? Don’t forget the salt! Making a pot of coffee, throw some salt in — it enhances the flavor! Need to clean something in the house? Pour salt in the cleaning water and the item will come clean. It can even shine brass and copper and prolong the life of cut flowers.

Farmers put out salt licks for their cattle and horses. Why? They know without the salt the animals will perish. In the wild, animals lick themselves when they are sweaty to get the salt produced from their own bodies.

Detroit and other cities even mine the stuff! They use it on their roads to get rid of snow and ice. It is a lot more effective than sand, and you can actually see it melt the ice before your very eyes.

We may think salt is an insignificant season, but I bet I could go into any home and find table salt in the pantry, or on the table. We need salt — without a certain measure of salt in our bodies, we can die. Scary thought huh?

Is it any surprise then that Jesus said, “You are the salt of the world…” when He talked to His Disciples. Jesus knew the impact salt had on everyday life, and compared us to salt. Salt may not be the most precious commodity on earth, but it is certainly one of the most essential.

In my own sphere of influence, have I made a difference? Am I “salt” to those around me? People may never think of me in those terms, just like they don’t actively think about salt. But when they reach for the salt, they expect to find it. If they look for Jesus, will they know where to look?
