Seek Ye First
We just ushered in a brand new year; 2009 - wow. When I was a child growing up in the 60’s, even the year 2000 seemed like a distant futuristic place where people would be riding around in spaceships - like on the Jetson’s. LOL. Now we are almost a decade into the 21st century! Unbelievable how time flies....
Everywhere people are wishing each other New Year’s blessings. For us, a new year is like a new beginning. People make resolutions that will probably be broken in a couple weeks. But for today, we have new hopes for a brighter tomorrow. We pray for new jobs, bigger homes, better relationships and an all around better life. But God says “Seek ye FIRST the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.” Why don’t we just believe that?
Nothing has changed with God - The bible says “Jesus Christ; the same yesterday, today and forever.” He never changes. We may be in a new calendar year, but in the spiritual realm, time does not exist. We are so physically-minded, it’s hard to wrap our heads around a place where time is no more, isn‘t it? But there is such a place! God promised it in His Word. Are you going there? You must FIRST set your sights on the kingdom of God, and His righteousness for your life to be assured. You must FIRST believe in Jesus and put your whole life into the hands of God's precious Son, Jesus Christ to be assured.
God knows our every need. He knows the resolutions we make and if we will keep them or not. He knows the deepest needs of our hearts and -He alone- can fulfill them. The Bible says “But my God shall supply ALL your need according to His riches in glory BY Christ Jesus.” Not just some needs, but ALL of them - through Christ. Without Christ, we can do nothing. He controls everything. Everything was made by Him and for Him and everything exists because of Him. Only because of Christ we are able to open our eyes every morning. Once you realize that, your life takes on a whole new perspective.
Christ says in the first chapter of John “What seek ye?” to two of the disciples of John. They said “Master, where dwellest Thou?” He answered “Come and see.” That is to say; Follow me and find out. Are you following after Jesus, seeking His righteousness for your life? Where does He dwell in your life? Does He dwell in your heart? Make a New Year’s resolution for 2009 that has real eternal value: Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.
Now, may the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost be with you all in this new year and forever. Amen.
