Prayers
PRAYER OF PETITION
1Samuel 1:9-18; Luke18:1-7; Matthew 6:9-11
Prayer is an act of presenting our request to God with the aim of expectation of receiving those things that are being requested for. This kind of prayer unto the Almighty God (Matthew 6:9) to interfere in one’s personal affairs, making reference to one’s right as a child of God with reference to God as just and impartial God is referred to as prayer of petition. It is plea from a burdened heart to demand an immediate solution to the present predicament, while waiting till the answers are granted. Faith and other Christian virtues are not substitutes for this kind of prayer, as the Lord commanded it despite the fact that God knows all our need before we ask (Matthew 6:8). Prayer of petition is the key that unlock the door of God’s provision to the needy (Matthew 6:11), it opens the door of God’s pardon to sinners and backsliders, and the door of God’s protection to the humble (Matthew 6:13).
PROMPTS OF PETITION FROM A TROUBLED HEART
1Samuel 1:5, 9-10; Genesis 25:21-22; Psalm 70:5; Matthew 6:9; Luke18:1
Troubles are often the prompts of saints’ prayers. These could be poverty (Psalm 70:5), Barrenness (Genesis 25:21), provocation from adversaries (Luke 18:3; 1Samuel 1:6); Debt (2Kings 4:1); loss of precious gift (2Kings 4:18-20, 27); death threat to family members and relations (Esther 3:13; 4:15-17; 3:1-4); death verdict or negative prophecy (Isaiah 38:1-3) and depression (Ephesians 3:13-14).
Moreover, the Lord commanded the believers to pray and faint not. Prayers of petition can only come from the lips of the sons and daughters of God (Matthew 6:9).
This calls for genuine repentance on the part of sinners and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. It is only then we can boldly say “our father which art in heaven”.
Prayer of petition should begin with praise and worship and come from the heart that is totally submissive to the will of God. (Matthew 6:9-10).
PROMISES OF GOD FOR A TREMBLING HEART
Psalm 72:12; Isaiah 41:17; 1John5:15; 1Thessalonians 5:23; Luke 11:13; James 1:5; Philippians 4:6, 19; James 5:13
God’s word contains many promises for the trembling souls. God’s promises are potent and reliable as God, they can never fail. These promises cover every areas of life of the Christian; spiritual, physical, material, financial, academic, family and many more. It is therefore, the onus of every Christian to claim these unfailing promises, be fully persuaded in them, and embrace them (Hebrew 11:13). Confess them and be persistent until they receive the answers. God’s promises can never fail.
POTENCY OF PETITION FOR A TRIUMPHANT HEIR OF SALVATION
1Samuel 1:8-20; 2kings 4:3-7; 20:4-6; Esther 9:1-19; Matthew 6:11-13
Many blessings awaits the faithful Christian who will not result into speaking provocative or sinful words, complaining or seeking help from idols and false prophets and prophetesses, but will be persistent in prayer of petition until the desires come. Prayer of petition brings children to the barren, escape form death, long life, material provisions. God’s mercy and forgiveness, divine protection and provision for every need.
On the other hand, it is the antidote against hunger, guilty conscience, fear, oppression, sicknesses, diseases, miscarriages, and unnecessary delay in marriage, poverty, continual loss of family members and everything that is evil. God is looking for a Christian who will say like Jacob “I will not let you go, except thou bless me”
