THE MANDATE OF CHRIST FOR ALL BELIEVERS
Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-20; Acts 1:8
Preaching the gospel to every creature is Christ’s mandate for all believers and our primary assignment in this world. “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen” (Matthew 28:19-20). He never says go ye into all the world and specialize in music, worship, prophecies, healing, deliverance, prosperity and teaching of doctrine.
The subject of propagating the gospel is a prime importance to God and His church 2Peter 3:9; Galatians 3:80. It can therefore not be over-emphasized 2Peter 1:12-13).
It is uppermost in the mind of God. This is the reason why Christ came into the world to lay down His life (John 10:11). It is foremost responsibility committed to our hands by the Lord Jesus Christ.
As we presently stress personal revival, there may be tendency to overlook the need to give priority attention to preaching the gospel as well. The task of preaching the gospel is not only imperative but urgent (John 4:35).
1. THE COMMAND FOR CHRISTIANS
Matthew 28:19-20; Mark16:15; 2Chronichles 30:15; Jonah 3:2; John 20:21; Jeremiah 35:15; 44:4
“Then said Jesus unto them again: Peace be unto you, as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you” (John 20:21).
From the Old Testament dispensation God has been charging His saint to preach the gospel (Matthew 10:5-8; Luke 10:1-3). Following Christ’s examples, the apostles urged believers to preach the gospel (Acts 10:42; 2Timothy 4:2).
God has committed great responsibility into our hands because multitudes are dying daily, unsaved are going to hell (Revelation 20:11-12); God’s judgment
Is on the sinners (Psalm 9:17; Revelation 21:8). As the Apostles of old consecrated themselves to preach the gospel, so must we (Romans 1:14; 1Corinthians 9:16).
We can not win sinners by our own ability or by worldly wisdom. We must be born again. We must identify with Christ (Mark 8:38). Effectiveness demands the enablement of the Spirit (Acts 1:8).
2. THE CONTENT AND THE CONTEXT
Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15; Romans 5:8; Acts 13:38; Matthew 4:17; Luke 24:47; John 3:3; Luke 4:18-19; John 4:5-9; Acts 8:26-28; 20:20
John 1:45-46
From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17).
The sinner is desperately need of salvation because of the reality of hell – a place of everlasting torment, agony and suffering (Luke 16:23; Mark 9:43-44). A sinner must acknowledge his/her sinfulness (Psalm 51:3-5); realize that he can not save himself, confess his sin (Proverbs 28:13); repent and believe the Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 16:30-31).
We are to preach the gospel to everyone we come in contact with – our relations, neighbors, colleagues, Adulterers/adulteresses, drug addicts, the ungodly rich, the intellectuals, and remind them of the danger of eternal lake of fire if they die unrepentant. We should reject all excuses to prevent us from preaching the gospel: business or academic pursuits, unwillingness to suffer inconvenience (Acts 20:20-24), family consideration (Matthew 10:37-39).
3. THE CONFIRMATION AND CONMMENDATION
Mark 16:20; Isaiah 8:18; 55:10-11; Luke 8:40; Acts 6:7; Luke 13:13-19; Daniel 12:3; Matthew 25:23; Psalms 126:5-6
God has promised to confirm His word by ensuring that when it is faithfully preached, it prosper in bringing conviction, repentance, conversion, purity and power. The word will not go out void. Though some may reject, many are waiting to receive the gospel message (John 8:21, 30).
When we preach the gospel as commanded by the Lord we realize that God’s commendation and crown awaits us “The fruit of righteousness is a tree of life: and he that winneth souls is wise” (proverbs 11:30). He rewards us in time and eternity.
