"The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit."
(Proverbs 15:04)
When I was about nine years old my father took me out in the woods and showed me how to handle guns. He owned a pistol and a rifle and wanted me to know how to properly use them. These guns could help or hurt, and Dad knew that it was important to respect that power. We all should have had the same instruction about our tongue. Our words can bless or curse. They can bring healing and life or they can crush the spirit and bring destruction and death. We would all run for cover if some fool were randomly shooting every which way, yet we casually fire off words with little thought as to who we might wound. If the wounds of a tongue were as evident as a physical wound our loved ones would probably be walking around in bandages a lot of the time. Use your words carefully. Aim them to hit the target you are intending to hit, and don't randomly fire off in just any direction. In fact, sometimes you may be able to do well by just holding your fire.
