It’s here again-Christmas! My favorite time of year has full circled once again. And while some folks complain about all the commercialism and the fake white beards of the many Santa’s who are clad in red suits, I choose to take a different approach! I choose to embrace it all! Okay so I must admit it’s gone a bit to far when Halloween is barely over and there are Christmas decorations in every store. So I have two choices: I can complain –or…I can be a jolly good elf. Today I choose the later. I choose to be that jolly good elf who spreads good cheer and happy smiles to everyone she sees.
Today I was shocked at something I read. A Christian online company had a question for the day. They asked, “Is Santa Claus Santa"? I wasn’t going to say anything. But being the outspoken writer that I am-I just couldn’t let this one go. So...I quite willingly replied! I shared some of my thoughts on this very nature and here’s some of what I shared.
So you think Santa Claus is Satan? Do you know who Santa is? Or should I ask: Do you know who he was? He was known as St. Nicholas, Patron and protector of children! While he was still a young man he became the Bishop of Myra. He spent his entire life helping people-especially children! And you say he is Satan? Nah...I think not!
Let’s not forget about the birth of our savior, Jesus Christ. He was born to set us free! There was no greater gift than this! Then there was St. Nicholas. He and Jesus had one thing in common-they spent their lives giving to others but for one reason-love. And this brings me to Santa Claus. Okay…so we over did it a little. We added a red suit and plumped him up a bit. We even thought if we threw in some reindeer-that would be fun. And you know something? It is! And I think Jesus wouldn’t have it any other way! Each Christmas we gather up our gifts and give them to those we love. So, while we may have added a little pizzazz in celebrating our Lords birthday, the idea is still there.
We are celebrating love. And no matter how you look at it-no matter how you do it, that’s the bottom line. Some of us go all out with lights and big trees! We save our money just so we can buy that special gift for someone we love. And why not? Why not celebrate in style? I say quit complaining and take this one time each year to celebrate Jesus in style! Hang up 10,000 lights that blink. Cut down the biggest tree you can find! Bake Christmas cookies and cover them with cream cheese frosting! Buy that special Christmas coffee blend and spoon some whipped cream on top-don’t forget the nutmeg! Dance to fun Christmas songs, and call your folks to tell them how much you love them! Hug your kids and watch old fashioned Christmas movies. This is the one day we “should” Be whooping it up!!!
So this jolly good elf is going to put bells on her pointed little shoes and sing Christmas carols when the mood hits her. Yep-that’s what I ‘m
going to do! I am going to shout my love for Jesus from the roof top until it echoes off the mountain across the street! And…on Christmas Eve I am going to sit up late with my 10 year old son and listen quietly-to see if I can hear the prancing of eight tiny reindeer. And as I lay down to go to sleep I hope to dream of sugar plums and a man dressed in a red suit!
