PART II---OUR EARLY FORMATIVE YEARS
“Mom, Joey pushed me!” exclaimed Alexa “I wasn’t doing anything and he just came up and pushed me really hard.”

“Dad, there’s a big mean monster under my bed,” quivered Bobby. “Can’t you see it under there? Make it go away.”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Hey, that’s my bicycle and you can’t ride it!” yelled Betsey. “I just got it on my birthday. Where’s yours?”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Can I have a cookie now?” begged Chad. “I like chocolate chip the best and I’ve been real good. Please, pretty please.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Mom, thanks for taking me to Sunday school this morning. Mrs. French said that she is always glad to see me,” said Jenna.

When I reflect on the days when I was a child life seemed so carefree and simple. Barbie dolls, jumping rope, setting up dishes for a tea party and playing dress-up fascinated me. Slumber parties, birthday celebrations, and riding a bicycle were all milestones along the way. Celebrating birthday parties and graduating from elementary school to middle school were a very important part of my life to me. Soccer games, volleyball, and softball gave me a way to get exercise. In fact everything centered on me. And my little brother was always “bugging” me.
My pesky brother liked to play with Star Wars and GI Joe figures. His matchbox cars were all over the floor and Mom always kept reminding him to pick them up. He read comic books and collected football cards. He went camping with the Boy Scouts and he played t-ball, football or baseball. His dirty uniforms ended up on the floor and had a disgusting smell. He teased me, pulled my hair, shoved me up against the wall and was just plain mean. He tripped me and was always using a machine gun, or Uzi, or whatever they call them to shoot me and pretend that I had been killed.
I was so glad when I graduated from middle school and finally was able to attend high school. High school meant a whirlwind of activities. Football games, cheerleading practice and basketball games were always on the school calendar. Drama club, electing class officers, and working on the school newspaper were some of the activities I participated in while at high school. Learning to drive was one of the best parts of being in high school. Having that license in your wallet meant a whole new type of independence. I had to turn in homework, study for tests and final exams, and prepare for the ACT or SAT. Deciding where to go to college or whether or not I even wanted to attend college was probably the most important choice I had to make in my senior year. It may have seemed hard at that time to balance everything but graduating from high school really was actually just the preparation for adulthood.
Application: I Corinthians 13:11---When I was a child, I talked like a child; I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man I put away childish ways behind me (NIV)
