Larry Lilly's Letter Monday November 17, 2008
When I was a kid Reader's Digest ran an ad each month by a large corporation stating said corporate gurus understood the value of a certain skill readily learned by 99.44% of the population. The ad stated:
"Send me a man who reads."
Back in those days, that a woman could actually read never occured to anyone.
My sister had taught me the art of reading and over the years I learned the value of specialized reading meaning that I read material related to what I was doing at the time, or what I wanted to do next, and often this involved learning to understand what I was reading. The history of our nation is replete with the dramatic change that learning to read has made in the life of many men and women.
Years ago I heard and used a story of a young man who stated as he was sitting with his graduating class waiting for his group's turn to parade across the stage to receive their diploma,
"I am never going to read another book as long as I live."
Tragically, many have adapted this intention and stuck to it tenaciously.
Yet super successful people from all walks of life are on the reading bandwagon. A few years ago I was reading "Stephen King on Writing" a memoir of the craft, Mr. King posited that a good writer must read voraciously. He lists 93 books that he had read over the last 3-4 years, the period in which he had written four books. Mr. King's prime rule is: "Write a lot and read a lot."
A man considered by many to be our most unusual president, Abraham Lincoln, was legendary for his reading habits which started in his youth and were practiced up to the very day of his assassination. Concerning reading Mr. Lincoln wrote:
"A capacity and taste for reading gives access to whatever has already been discovered by others."
Personally, I would rather read a good book than sit and watch the idiot tube by the hour. I also study the scriptures and thoroughly enjoy this, whether I am putting together a sermon, article or finding verses to answer someone's question. By the way, a few years ago I read through the Bible as literature and this opened an entire new world. Some of the world's very best stories are right in the book on your coffee table. Certainly the Bible is far more than literature, but don't miss out of the greatest story ever told.

I agree! I read a lot more than I write; in fact, the past few months I've written much less than I've read. "God is in heaven, you are on earth, so let your words be few." has really tempered by zeal when it comes to writing.
