The King of Presidents

If Christians heard it once in the days preceding the election, we heard it many times:

2 Chronicles 7:14 “…if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

Many of us were on our knees in the weeks and months before the election. We studied the candidates’ platforms, discussed the issues, and shared our opinions in conversations and emails. We voted. Some of us got exactly what we wanted, while others were disappointed.

We have a new president. Do we still believe 2 Chronicles 7:14 is true?

I notice that the Scripture doesn’t say that when we humble ourselves, seek God and turn from wickedness, God will give us the president we chose with our own infinite wisdom. Instead, it says that He will hear us, forgive us and heal our land. God doesn’t need a particular president to accomplish this work. In Proverbs 21:1 it says, “The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD; he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases.”

Are we praying? Have we humbled ourselves?

President-elect Barack Obama’s 1,000 watt victory smile is lighting up televisions, newspapers and magazines worldwide. He has big dreams, he’s made big promises, but he faces a more than daunting responsibility.

He is just a man.

A large majority of our country is enamored and expects the tide of woe to turn at President Obama’s command. A strong minority fear his politics, while fewer fear his morals and his race.

Eight years ago, I was enamored and hoped the tide of woe would turn in another president’s hands. A strong minority feared his politics and fewer feared his morals and race.

He was just a man.

The pendulum of politics swings back and forth over time. Popular opinion vacillates with the whim of the moment and the perception of the press. We are foolish if we put our hope and confidence in government, when we have God.

Israel did that once. After her great deliverance from Egypt and conquering march into the Promised Land, her elders demanded that God give her a king like the kings other nations had. God gave Israel what she asked for. King Saul proved to be a vain hope, but he was God’s man for that time for a purpose.

God is not to be ousted or elected. He does not change with popular opinion or the whims of mankind. He is not concerned with His press. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever,” Hebrews 13:8.

God does not want our lip service. He wants us to trust Him regardless of who is or who is not our president. He wants us depending on Him when our bank account is full and when it is empty; when we are at war and when we are at peace. In every season without fail, He expects us to praise Him, believe Him and wait upon Him. He commands us to encourage and help one another in His name. When we do, we have this promise:

Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness will go before you,
and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.

The LORD will guide you always;
he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land
and will strengthen your frame.
You will be like a well-watered garden,
like a spring whose waters never fail. Isaiah 58:8, 11

Our maker holds us in His hand, just as He always has. We have nothing to fear.

I want President Obama to be a great president. I hope that Christians in America turn to God and pray that He will lead this country forward into righteousness through the man He appointed to serve at this time. “For nothing is impossible with God." Luke 1:37

What a comforting reminder. Seems to me like every election is filled with its share of crying, "The sky is falling! The sky is falling!" What if we prayed like the verse says? I have been compelled to intercede for this new president. There is great hope for every man. Is God's arm too short that it cannot save? Or move the hearts of kings? Thanks, Deb. Very well-written!

Debbie, how right you are. Would to God that Christians understood that they need to repent but for most it seems that it is the "other" guy to whom God is speaking. The violence is already starting since this election. We are going to be ask to "stand" for our faith so we had better "know" our God or we will not be able to stand. Jesus is our KING.

Awe Debbie, so well stated. God is indeed still in control. No matter what happens in the days ahead till Christ returns, people will still be saved, sins will be forgiven, and folks of all walks of life will be ministered to. Long as there is still one Christian in this ole world, the Holy Spirit will be here and He still restrains the evil one. PTL!
