The Birth of a Child

Never was a child more wanted or more loved. The anticipation of his arrival caused his family members to be giddy with delight. The family and friends would gather together, making preparations, talking of the wonderful day when he would arrive. “It could be today!” they would hopefully proclaim with enthusiasm. They sang with pure joy as they worked, preparing for the little child. His room was all ready. His father had worked tirelessly decorating it perfectly and was absolutely jubilant with pride for the newborn’s arrival. The child’s name had already been decided on and many plans for his new life had been made. To abort this child was never an option. He was loved beyond measure – and everyone could hardly wait to greet him.

The child himself was feeling the painful pangs of birth. It seemed like forever he’d been struggling in the womb, awaiting his release. The darkness at times seemed to suffocate him. But there were other times when he felt pretty safe. He was torn between the dark comfort of his hiding place and the unknown hope of being set free. Each new day brought him closer and closer to the birth canal and each new day seemed to be a little more painful than the last. His body began to be crushed with the closeness of his imminent birth - when finally; the day arrived when the child was to be born. He knew he was about to be thrown into the unknown realm of life outside his cozy, comfort zone. But he was ready, he thought. He could only imagine what was to come.

As the child was pushed deeper and deeper into the birth canal, he felt the suspense of the unknown awaiting him. At one point he resisted but the process of life was too much for him. Further and further he traveled against the walls of the canal until at last he saw a glowing light ahead. The light was soft and comforting and seemed to beckon him on. Suddenly the light grew brighter and brighter and the child was thrust forth into life. His family members were all there, smiling with joy, holding him in their reassuring arms. It was a time of great rejoicing. He could not believe just minutes before he’d been so afraid of this moment. It was a jubilant time for all and the child knew he had finally arrived to his appointed destination.

The sights and sounds were more beautiful than he could have ever imagined. Love was perfected in his arrival – its warmth and presence, unmistakable. As he was passed from family member to family member and then to friends for loving embraces, he looked up……and saw his Father. For a moment he couldn’t breathe at the splendor of what he saw. The child recognized Him immediately, yet the brightness of His glory was astounding and like nothing his eyes had ever seen.

His Father held arms open wide to embrace the child, the nail scars in His hands still visible. The child was overcome with emotions of worship, adoration, love, humility, gratitude, peace and contentment in His Father’s arms. A crown was placed on his head. A robe of pure white linen wrapped around him. The Lord looked deeply into His precious child’s eyes and said “Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Enter into the glory of the LORD.” Trembling with emotion, the child took the crown and laid it at his Father’s feet as the angels sang “Holy, Holy, Holy – Worthy, Worthy, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain!” The child joined in the eternal praises to His Father. He was finally home…..

Psalms 116:15 - Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.
