Hearing God’s Voice
God has required his people in every dispensation to hear and obey His voice. Unless we hear God’s voice there can be no communication, no fellowship, no intimacy. There are many precious promises that are connected with hearing God’s voice. Look at Exodus 15:26;” If you will diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord your God, and will do what is right in His sight, and will give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statures, I will put none of these diseases upon you which I put on the Egyptians; for I am the Lord that heals you.” God promises to be our Jehovah Rophi, our healer if we will hear and obey His voice. This promise is repeated in Deuteronomy 28:3 but adds: All these blessings shall come on you and overtake you if you shall hearken to the voice of the Lord your God. We are given a solemn warning in this same chapter which reads;” But it shall come to pass if you will not hearken to the voice of the Lord your God to observe to do all His commandments which I command you this day, then all these curses shall come upon you and overtake you. God is speaking to His people, the nation of Israel. He promises a blessing if they hear ,curses if they do not.

Look at what God told the people through Jeremiah:” For I spoke not to your fathers nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices only, but this thing commanded I them, saying, obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people; and walk you in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you; But they hearken not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.” As I read these verses of scripture I can see that God is very serious about His people hearing His voice, I must believe that He is speaking. Am I listening?

Let us follow this theme into the New Testament. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. John 10:27 Jesus says that His sheep, or followers hears His voice. He did not say that the Methodist, Pentecostals, Baptist, or any denomination was His followers, but those that hear His voice. And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold, them also I must bring, and they shall hear My voice. All of Jesus sheep are required to hear His voice. And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him; for they know not the voice of strangers. Jesus informs us in Matthew 4:4;” Man shall not life by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. The words that proceeds and comes from God’s mouth are Rhema words, spoken words that changes their surroundings. God’s spoken word is to be as common, and as important as bread in my life.

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17 Faith comes when we hear a Rhema, word from God. That is, a word from the lips of God. Not only does God spoken word brings faith but it nourishes and sustains us. I know that question has entered your mind; How can I hear the voice of God? What must I do? In 1 Kings 3:1-15 God appeared to Solomon and promised to give him whatever he asked for, and Solomon asked God for:” Give your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and bad.” Solomon asked God for a understanding heart, these two words are interpreted to mean, {to hear, to perceive by ear}

Solomon is asking God to give him a heart to hear. The first thing that we need is a heart that wants to hear God, that longs to hear God. Ask for one. Proverbs 4:20 “ My son, attend to My voice; incline your ear to My sayings. The next thing that we need to do is give God our undivided attention. Quiet time, quality time, no rush. How can I know that I am hearing from God? God’s voice will always agree with scripture. Psalms 119:105 “ Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path. If it is a word from God, it will bear the peace of God. Colossians 3:15 Let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which you are called in one body; and be ye thankful. If you cannot thank God, it’s not God. We live in a time that it is imperative that we hear the voice of God. The book of Revelation is a letter that Jesus sent to Seven literal Churches in Asia Minor, as well as to the Body of Christ today. The last thing Jesus had to say to each of those Churches was: He that has ears to hear, let them hear what the Spirit is saying to the Churches. We cannot afford to miss God in these perilous times. Are you hearing God?
