Exodus 20:3-4
Do not worship any other gods besides me. Do not make idols of any kind, whether in shape of birds or animals or fish.
Picture idols. What picture comes to mind? A golden calf? An eagle carved of stone? A statue of some sort? Certainly these can be considered idols if worshipped, but there are other forms as well.
Idols are symbols or representations of an object of worship, a false god, and objects of extreme devotion.
Object of extreme devotion? Absolutely! Do you know that your job, home, mate, money, etc. can be considered an idol? Certainly! If we hold these people, positions, or possessions in higher esteem and place them first in our lives, they become idols. The Bible reveals that we serve a jealous God. The almighty, omnipotent, and marvelous God will not take the backseat to any one or any thing.
Christians know better than to bow to a statue or to worship an animal or an object of nature, but we tend to forget that idols don't always fit that stereotype.
Living in this world, we will have to work to survive. We must spend time with our families and friends. God knows our hearts. God knows our thoughts. He knows we have earthly responsibilities. He knows everything. We just have to be careful and not let the things of this world consume all of our time, our energy, or our thoughts. God must stay first in our lives.
If you died today, are you absolutely certain that you would go to heaven? You can be! TRUST JESUS NOW
