Broken Pieces
There on Grandma’s fireplace mantle
sat a vase deemed to be, one of a kind
Often Grandma would gently polish it
saying another like this you can’t find
Whenever I’d go to visit my Grandma
her special vase always caught my eye
I knew better, than to even go near it
if it was damaged, grandma might cry
One day, on one of those many visits
I defied, Grandma’s strict instruction
All alone in the room I couldn’t resist
no one was there to offer an objection
As I spun the vase around in my hand
trying to discover what made it unique
I saw only flowers, with painted petals
so I turned it over, to get a better peek
I heard Grandma calling out my name
quickly turning about to face the door
The vase slipped right out of my hand
and shattered into pieces, on the floor
Viewing the pieces thru a wall of tears
my careless actions brought me shame
I saw pain in my Grandma’s aging eyes
before she softly, whispered my name
Running into Grandma’s opened arms
I whispered, oh Grandma I’m so sorry
Her gentle hand tilted my head upward
it’s just a vase child so don’t you worry
Come morning, we’ll take it into town
to that pottery shop on Maple Avenue
The potter will put back, on the wheel
when he’s finished it’ll be just like new
So we gathered up, all the little pieces
then carefully place them all, in a sack
Grandma said things like this happen
but a family broken is hard to get back
We walked the short distance to town
and soon found the little pottery shop
Oh sure it can be fixed the potter said
I’ll completely restore, it before I stop
While we sat in a cafe across the street
Grandma reached out, taking my hand
She said I’ve wanted to tell this story
you are old enough now to understand
That old vase, has been broken before
it already had weak spots on the inside
So when it dropped, out of your hand
it’s fracture interior just couldn’t abide
Your Grandpa and I use to argue a lot
angry and hurtful words took their toll
Then this friend told us all about Jesus
of how, he would make our life whole
When things are broken on the inside
the outside becomes a weakened shell
But when the inside is solid and intact
it’ll take a few tumbles and still prevail
We were just like that old broken vase
on the outside things may seem alright
But on the inside there was a weakness
that remained hidden, just out of sight
We went to church seeking to be fixed
God placed us upon his potter’s wheel
He mended the weaknesses, in our life
he gave a peace and joy, that is so real
And as far as the old vase is concerned
it wasn’t worth much, when it was new
But now it really does have some worth
because it has brought me closer to you
