Have you not known?
Have you not heard?
Has it not been told you
from the beginning?
Have you not understood
from the foundations
of the earth?
It is He
Who sits above
the circle of the earth,
and its inhabitants
are like grasshoppers.
[Isaiah 40:21-22]
*************************
"I'm a grasshopper,
Lord."
[PATIENT SILENCE.]
"That's it:
a weakly, puny, little,
sickly-shade-of-green
grasshopper."
[NOD.]
"A worthless little spit
of a bug,
(Sorrowful frown.)
....hopping about the tall grass.
(Thoughtful sigh.)
I can't even hop, anymore."
"I understand, My precious."
"I'm a grasshopper, that
can't hop."
[CHUCKLE.]
"And, they say that grasshoppers
can sing.
(Grimmace.)
But, I can't sing, either!"
[NOD.]
"I'm a hop-less,
out-of-tune grasshopper."
[SMILE!]
(Sigh.)
"That's it."
"Yes, child."
[NOD.]
"But,
you're Mine."
*************************
To whom then
will you compare Me,
that I should be like
Him?
Says the Holy One.
Lift up your eyes
on high
and see:
Who created these?
He Who brings out
their host
by number,
calling them
all by name;
by the greatness
of His might,
and because
He is strong in power
not one is missing.
[Isaiah 40:25-26]

[Author's note: According
to the Columbia Encyclopedia,
there are 9,000 species
of grasshoppers. Both
male and females can sing,
or 'stridulate' well. All
are able to jump up to
20x their body length. Some
grasshoppers can fly very well;
others can fly just a little....
and, some: not at all.]
