The word walk is used in many different ways in the Bible and denotes many different meanings. To walk means to pass through, to go, to travel, to come, depart, proceed, lead, carry, bring, follow, tread, guide, march, be occupied, progress, make due use of opportunities and to live.
In looking at what the word walk can mean, it gives us a clearer picture about what our walk in Christ means and what that actually requires of us. Our walk can lead us into many different circumstances and many different places. We are required to undertake our walk for many different reasons, often depending on individual need or specific teachings.
In our early walk, it is more than likely about learning and changing in ourselves. To be able to walk in the manner that God has intended requires us to be able to identify with Christ and to rely wholely and completely on God. This can take many years or even a lifetime to bring to its fullest fruition, but that doesn’t mean we are unable to do God’s work beforehand, along the way.
Our Christian walk will take us through many different stages and different levels of authority. How we progress through those different stages is fully up to God and His discretion based upon how we make use of the opportunities put before us by God. So much of our preparation takes place before we have even committed our lives to God and accepted Jesus as our Lord and Saviour. God has been preparing me for His purpose and plan since the day I was born, and so it is for all. The trials and tribulations we endure are a basis for learning, teaching, identifying or for disciplinary purposes. The reasons for these are only known to God and are impressed on our spirit and our hearts to inspire a needed change within ourselves.
In undertaking our walk, we are required to do all of the things that describe the word walk. We are to pass through, all of the lessons set before us. We are to go wherever the Holy Spirit leads us. We are to travel, possibly far and wide, to deliver His message. We are to come, as little children to our Lord and Saviour. We are to depart, from our old life of sin. We are to proceed, in the light of the Lord. We are to lead, non-believers to the truth. We are to carry, others who are in need or are struggling. We are to bring, the light of the world into the lives of the lost. We are to follow, in Jesus’ disciples footsteps. We are to tread, where Jesus has tread. We are to guide, the body of Christ into its full Glory. We are to march, like faithful Christian soldiers. We are to be occupied, in God’s work for the glory of His kingdom. We are to progress, in our faith and obedience. We are to make due use of opportunities, so we can witness in our everyday lives to those whose planted seed may grow. We are to live, in Christ as He lives in us.
So as we look into what our walk entails, it is simply and obediently done but is a complexity of so many things that if we thought about all we needed to do or would be doing in our lifetimes, we may not march ahead. This is why our understanding of our walk is limited and why God, through His Holy Spirit, takes us only one step at a time.
When someone becomes a Christian, I’m sure that they expect to see changes straight away, I know I did. But as your understanding grows, as did mine, you come to realize that your Christian walk of faith is a journey, a lifelong journey, of which the Holy Spirit is your guide, teacher, confidant, support, encouragement and your endless resource for everything that you will need along the way.
Our walk in Christ, upon this earth, is a learning curve which allows us to become more Christ like, to completely relate to what Jesus experienced during His time on earth and to entirely understand what His purpose and plan was according to God and His purpose and plan for His creation.
Although our walk is an individual one, we are not expected to walk alone, one because our Holy Triune God is with us all the way, and two, because our fellow Christian brothers and sister are with us also. The entire body of Christ is to walk united and whole to be able to truly achieve the Glory of God and be a complete representation of Christ.
Romans 12:5, in the same way we who are many are one body in Christ and individually members of one another. 1Cor 12:12-14, For as the body is one and has many parts, and all the parts of that body, though many, are one body—so also is Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. 14 So the body is not one part but many.
Our walk isn’t just confined to what we walk through but how we walk it. We must always be mindful of our character and attitude, our behaviour and the way in which, as a Christian, we represent Christ. We aren’t perfect and are bound to do the wrong thing, but how we go about correcting these things becomes a part of our walk also.
The progression of our walk is one that is embedded in obedience, faith and selflessness. Given our sinful earthly bodies, this is where our everyday test lies and one that we must be aware of and consciously keep in check so that our walk will always be within God’s will and not our own. A daily test that ensures we are marching toward God’s Holy heavenly Kingdom and reaping a harvest that glorifies God.
