4. THE ORIGIN OF THE SCRIPTURES:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with Elohim, and the Word was Elohim. The same was in the beginning with Elohim. All things were made by Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. (John 1:1-4)
Elohim, having of old spoken in many portions and many ways to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by the Son, whom He has appointed heir of all, through whom also He made the ages, who being the brightness of the esteem and the exact representation of His substance, and sustaining all by the Word of His power, having made a cleansing of our sins through Himself, sat down at the right hand of the Greatness on high... (Hebrews 1:1-3 The Scriptures)
The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah... To whom the Word of YaHWeH came...
Then the Word of YaHWeH came unto me, saying, "Before I formed you in the belly I knew you; and before you came forth out of the womb I sanctified you, and I ordained you to be a prophet unto the nations." Then said I, Ah YaHWeH Elohim! behold, I cannot speak...
But YaHWeH said unto me, "Say not, I am a child: for you shall go to all that I shall send you, and whatsoever I command you, you shall speak... (Jer. 1:1-7)
The Almighty is a Being who communicates His thoughts by means of spoken or written words. The word SCRIPTURES literally means; that which was SCRIPTED or WRITTEN. Before the Word even existed in written form as THE SCRIPTURES, it existed in the Mind of the Eternal One (YHWH) in THOUGHT form. These thoughts were then translated into spoken words that men of Elohim under the inspiration of the Spirit of YaHWeH then scripted or wrote down.
David the psalmist understood this. As all Hebrew children he had been brought up to have respect for the Scriptures. (Deut. 6:7) He hid them in his heart (memorized them) so that he could meditate upon them day and night. (Ps.1:2 & 119:11)
Listen to these words that he wrote down in Psalm 139:17. How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O Elohim! How great is the sum of them.
These thoughts of YaHWeH that David found so precious, were the ones that had been written down by Moses and the prophets and that the nation of Israel regarded as the very Words of the Almighty.
These thoughts of YaHWeH in the written form of words, are quite literally the source of all spiritual as well as physical life for each and every person. His Words (spoken and written) are the seeds that cause a person to be born again spiritually, when he/she receives those words and believes them. There can be no life in any form without His words. The Person of Yahshua is the original SEED or WORD who was made flesh. (John 1:14) Consider these scriptures.
Yahshua said; Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of Elohim. (Mat.4:4)
He also said; The seed is the word of Elohim. (Luk. 8:11)
For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and returns not there, but it waters the earth and makes it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: so shall My word be that goes forth out of My mouth, it shall not return unto Me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. (Isa. 55:10-11)
It is the Spirit that gives life; the flesh profits nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life. (John 6:63)
Then Simon Peter answered Him, Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. (John 6:68)
Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of Elohim, which lives and abides forever. (1 Pet. 1:23)
The original Hebrew Scriptures are the very Words of the Almighty. They are His thoughts that He made known to His prophets in the form of spoken words. The only words that He first spoke and then literally wrote with His own finger on stone tablets were the Ten Commandments, known in Hebrew idiom as The Ten Words. (Ex. 20:1 & 24:12)
In part 5 we look at the importance of “rightly dividing” the Word of truth.
