Am I my Father’s daughter?
Sometimes I am a foster child—
loved and cared for,
but tentative and uncertain,
lacking trust.
In a family,
but not belonging
to a family;
never sure when I will be
shipped off, let go, sent away.
In desperate need
of a Father’s love,
afraid to trust it when it is offered,
not understanding what it means
to be my Father's child.
Am I my Father’s daughter?
Sometimes I am adopted—
loved and cared for,
belonging to a family,
given a new identity,
my Father’s name,
but always wondering
where I came from,
who am I really,
not understanding what it means
to be my Father's child.
Am I my Father’s daughter?
Sometimes I am a prodigal—
loved and cared for,
but selfish and impulsive,
thinking only of myself,
wasteful and wandering,
squandering my inheritance,
disdaining my Father’s love
and true inheritance,
not understanding what it means
to be my Father’s child.
Am I my Father’s daughter?
Sometimes I am the elder sibling—
loved and cared for,
but selfish and rigid,
thinking only of myself,
bitter and resentful,
waiting greedily for my inheritance,
ignoring my Father’s love
and true inheritance,
not understanding what it means
to be my Father’s child.
Am I my Father’s daughter?
Sometimes I am!
Loved and cared for,
trusting and confident,
rejoicing in who I am
and who my Father is,
delighted to be with my Father
and part of His family,
reflecting my Father
in all I say and do,
finally understanding what it means
to be my Father's child.
