I stand upon the lonesome shore
Like a neglected solitary tomb
Where paths of glory, springs of light
Are floating in my aching eyes
Then looking with my inward eye
I feel to have an eagle’s glance
And think of having a golden chance
And soar as high as the precipice
With the glorious hopes, with muffled fears
And then I see in solemn mood
To close my wings and enjoy the sight
Of how this world is going on
With homely joys with destiny obscure
I sit and think and feel it all
But soon I feel that I would fail
And when this fear does come to me
I find myself on the lonesome shore
And looking with darkened eyes
Standing like a neglected tomb
And my bosom heaves a sigh.
