I have always admired Wolves. The way they hunt to survive, the way they run across the plains, and the way they stay together as a pack. If you want to see great teamwork in action, watch a wolf pack. They work in a system that enables them to survive where most would fail. One of the reasons the pack concept works so well is that they have a leader. Without this leader looking out for the pack as a whole, they would surely not stand a chance. Like a team captain, the leader puts them in the position to win daily - finding them the best place to find food, shelter, and everything else necessary for survival.
Now that I am married and looking forward someday soon to having a pack of my own, I think a lot about my role as the Leader of the pack. I came across this quote by Bill Hybells that I hold onto tightly:
The leader is the organization’s top strategist… systematically envisioning the future and specifically mapping out how to get there.
As the Leader of the pack - the leader of the family, I help set the course for the success of the unit. Bad decisions on my part could lead to absolute disaster for the entire family. If I pray for wisdom, guidance, and direction from Christ, then I stand a chance of being successful. Just as important - if I lean on the balance of my wife, and I look to her for support, than I stand even a better chance of being successful. Even the organization’s top strategist needs a team to work with; and at times - help lead.
As the leader of the pack, one must envision what success looks like, and how to get there. If you envision a family that communicates, is open, and full of love - then you best bake in time together, and a system that encourages those activities. a winning team or pack does not do so by winging it - They practice everyday. Winners do not just show up for the game, they practice all week - preparing for greatness. Want to be the true leader of the pack? Practice everyday - starting now….
