Men
If men approached their daily walk with Christ with the same focus that a CEO of an organization places on the bottom line, would men be better off? I subscribe to the thought that they absolutely would be! Because by doing so, each and every day he would essentially be performing what in business would be referred to as a “Gap Analysis.”
A Gap Analysis is a tool that allows a company to compare its actual performance with its potential performance. Essentially it looks at where you are vs. where you want to be. Companies all over the world compete based on considering where they want to be. If they are not improving their products, improving the efficiencies by which their product are produced, or creating a more impactful marketing plan, they don’t stand a chance against the competition.
Such is the same for a Man. If he does not step back and take a look at the way he is living his life, comparing it to the life that the Lord desires for him to live, he too will not stand a chance – a chance at living the abundant life. H.G. Wells said that “Success is to be measured not by wealth, power, or fame, but by the ratio between what a man is and what he might be.”
In the book of Jeremiah, the Lord essentially told his people to do their own Gap Analysis when he said, “Stand by the roads and look, and ask for the ancient paths where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.” (Jeremiah 6.16 ESV) In today’s terms the roads could best be described as the “Where you are” and the good way would be considered the “Where you want to be.” But, where do the “Ancient Paths” fit in?
Think of the ancient paths (the paths of righteousness and holiness) as you would a Consultant. Corporations hire consultants (often at an enormous expense) because consultants have seen a plethora of businesses both succeed and fail- from the business plan, all the way up to the launch of the product. They have seen best practices and those practices that should never have even been attempted. They essentially are experts in advising you how to reach your intended potential and maximize your positive gains. Personally speaking, I cannot think of a better consultant to have access to than the Lord!! His analysis and recommendations for right living are outlined in the Bible and readily there for your review. You can either choose to ignore them, or follow them and find rest for your souls.
So, where should we be? It is spelled out clearly in the book of John. “Whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.” (John 2:6 ESV) “If anyone serves me, he must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.” (John 12:26 ESV) Don’t be like you are, be more like you ought to be – Be more like Jesus!
