With joy I have read, "It is written..."
Moreover, "Thus saith the Lord..."
How my soul was then filled with wonder
At the power of God's holy Word!
I have read of our Father's creation--
The heavens, the earth and the seas.
In obedience they sprang into being
With His almighty, "Let there be..."
I have read peaceful words of comfort
Contained in the book of Psalms.
"The Lord is my Shepherd. I shall not want,"
A soothing, refreshing balm.
And the Proverbs dispel deepest darkness,
Giving light to blinded eyes,
Laying low all worldly counsel,
Making simple ones discerning and wise.
I've shuddered with dread at, "Woe unto you,"
For 'twas spoken in holy displeasure,
And, "Then they will know I Am the Lord,"
As His judgment fell without measure.
Who can stand in the day of the Holy One's wrath?
Who can hide from an angry Lord?
'Tis better to walk in the righteous path
That is woven through God's holy Word!
When smothered by fear and anxiety,
When my heart was melting like wax,
I frantically searched through the Scriptures
'Til my spirit was calmed and relaxed...
By words as dear as an old trusted friend
On a worn and tear-stained page...
"I have loved thee with an everlasting love,"
And, "I'll be with thee to the end of the age."
When weary and heavy laden,
When I longed to be cheered and blest,
I was humbled by God's invitation--
"Come unto Me and find rest."
When needy I found reassurance,
"Behold the fowls of the air..."
And, "Consider the lilies, how they grow..."
Both are kept in the Father's good care.
I've read how the Savior foretold His death
On the cross of Mount Calvary...
"If I, even I, be lifted up,
I will draw all men unto Me."
When I felt the weight of my sin and shame,
I remembered that holy Hill,
Where the Lamb provided pardon and grace
And my trembling heart was stilled.
But the verse that thrilled this heart of mine,
Spoken by Jesus the Christ,
With power, authority, dignity and truth--
"I Am the Resurrection and Life."
Yes, with humility and reverence, joy and praise,
Into the Scriptures I've looked.
All that was needed for salvation and life
I found in the Book of Books!
"Thy testimonies also are my delight and my counselors."
Psalm 119:24 KJV
"They are not just idle words for you--they are your life."
Deuteronomy 32:47 NIV
